The Principal Gifts team is dedicated to securing transformational gifts in support of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s initiatives of highest value and priority. Gifts are secured and supported in partnership with Presidential and institutional leadership, as well as in collaboration with MD Anderson's network of committed Board of Visitors, faculty, major and planned gifts officers, and other volunteers that engage individuals in gifts of significance for the institution's initiatives.  An integral part of the Principal Gifts Team is implementing and planning cultivation strategies for ultra-high net-worth constituents and stakeholders (new and established) for the purpose of securing philanthropic gifts of $5 million and more.



Fundraising and Relationship Building—60%

  • Partner with the Executive Director, Principal Gifts and Strategic Initiatives in executing fundraising advancement for presidential, chief development officer and principal gift portfolio prospects
  • Effectively grow a personal portfolio of approximately 20-30 individual donors and prospects, primarily donors/prospects rated with capacity at $5 million and more
  • Synthesize institutional opportunities to advance cultivation, engagement, solicitation, and stewardship of principal gift prospects across the development enterprise
  • Collaborate with members of MD Anderson’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Divisional Chairs, Faculty leaders, and Development Division colleagues to execute on fundraising activities
  • Foster and maintain relationships with Board of Visitors, Advance Team members, campaign volunteers, institutional colleagues to expand MD Anderson’s principal gift donor base throughout Houston, the state of Texas, the nation and internationally
  • Network and connect regularly with donors and prospective donors, building and sustaining their positive relationships with the organization, as well as securing and pursuing related leads


Principal Gifts Program Strategy—25%

  • As a donor-centric fundraiser, partner with the Executive Director, Principal Gifts and Strategic Initiatives, the Associate Director, Individual Giving, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer and MD Anderson president on developing strategies for both project based and prospect aligned fundraising
  • In partnership with Prospect Development and Principal Gifts Team service line members, develop and implement long-range fundraising strategies for both affiliated and unaffiliated high net-worth individuals
  • Engage with Development Division prospect managers in co-creating strategies for principal gift prospects
  • Execute plans to identify, cultivate and close Principal Gifts
  • Support planning strategies to build pipeline for principal gift prospects, working with the major gifts team to maximize outreach and growth


Leadership and Volunteer Support Management—15%

  • Garner the trust and confidence of the president, academic leaders, senior staff, researchers, faculty, and Board of Visitors through partnering and supporting these stakeholders in the fundraising/engagement process;
  • Engage volunteer leaders in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of leading philanthropic families in Houston and nationally
  • Serve as an example of Engage in the long-term achievement of MD Anderson’s goals and objectives
  • Provide strategy, direction, and coordination to major and planned gift staff who have principal gift prospects in their portfolios
  • Assist the Associate Vice President and the Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer in planning and staffing volunteer governance groups (campaign cabinet, Board of Visitors, councils) needed to advance principal gift projects or programs


Required: Bachelor's degree.



Required: Seven years of experience in private fund development, direct fundraising, real estate sales and management, financial/banking, insurance, marketing, and/or direct sales and portfolio management. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Preferred: Professional fundraising certification, verifiable record of accomplishment of $10 million + in personally attributable charitable gifts closed and demonstrated experience working with faculty, executive leadership teams, senior campaign/board members and fellow development professionals to execute fundraising strategies.
