Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) – Breast Surgical Oncology

Department Overview – Breast Surgical Oncology:

The Breast Surgical Oncology department at MD Anderson is a high-volume, fast-paced clinical setting with a strong culture of teamwork and collaboration. Our APP team is deeply integrated into patient care and clinical decision-making and benefits from excellent retention, continuous professional development, and opportunities to lead initiatives in QI, research, and APP-led clinics.


Ideal Candidate Profile

Must-Haves:

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to work effectively in a dyad partnership
  • Professionalism in all forms of interaction and communication

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience managing surgical patients
  • Breast Surgical Oncology experience
  • Experience with Epic/OneConnect

Experience Level:
New graduates will be considered; however, prior APP experience is preferred.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive history and physical examinations for new, consult, and follow-up patients
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians and fellows to develop and implement care plans
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests, imaging, and lab work
  • Document clinical encounters clearly via dictation or manual entry
  • Perform minor outpatient procedures (e.g., wound care, seroma evacuation, suture removal)
  • Manage pre- and post-operative care for surgical patients
  • Provide thorough patient and family education
  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams across the institution
  • Participate in education, research, and administrative initiatives as needed

This role is best suited for an APP who thrives in a collaborative, detail-oriented environment. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with surgical oncology faculty in a high-impact, patient-centered practice.

Education
REQUIRED: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.

Licensure/Certification
REQUIRED: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.  Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.  Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

PREFERRED: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
