Advanced Practice Provider - Orthopaedic Oncology

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – either an APRN with RNFA certification or a Physician Assistant (PA) – to join our Orthopaedic Oncology Surgery team. This APP will function independently and collaboratively in the operating room, outpatient clinic, and inpatient settings, providing comprehensive care to patients with primary bone and soft tissue tumors, metastatic bone disease, and oncology-related musculoskeletal complications.
The role includes first and second assist in surgery, daily inpatient rounds, orthopedic procedures, and rotating after-hours and weekend call coverage. Candidates must be capable of functioning autonomously in a fast-paced and highly specialized environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical and Surgical Care
Assist as first and second assist in orthopaedic oncology surgeries
Manage daily inpatient rounds including physical exams, documentation, wound care, drain/tube management, and discharge planning
Provide outpatient evaluation, treatment planning, and follow-up care
Perform orthopedic procedures including arthrocentesis, joint or bursal injections, closed fracture reductions, splint and cast applications, and wound debridement
Monitor for and manage post-operative complications and coordinate additional diagnostic testing or treatment
Collaborate with physical therapists for orthotic and prosthetic planning and coordination
Manage oncology patients referred for musculoskeletal or orthopaedic complications, including those with liquid or solid tumors
Participate in coordination of home health services, patient education, and transition of care planning
Call Coverage
Provide after-hours and weekend call coverage for orthopaedic oncology patients
Evaluate and manage urgent or emergent orthopaedic oncology cases in the inpatient and emergency center settings
Respond to inpatient consults and implement appropriate surgical or non-surgical treatment
Coordinate care with ICU staff, MERIT team, and other specialists for emergent medical issues
Cover the operating room during after-hours and weekend shifts as needed
Education
REQUIRED: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant
Licensure/Certification
REQUIRED: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
PREFERRED: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
