Assistant Data Scientist Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
The primary purpose of this position is to develop and apply advanced computational and statistical methods for high-dimensional genomic and multi-omics data in Professor Wenyi Wang’s lab in the Department of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, providing reproducible analyses and tools that directly support the lab’s research goals.
The ideal candidate will hold a master’s degree and possess strong expertise in machine learning, computational biology or bioinformatics.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Bioinformatics and Computational Analysis:
- Analyze high-dimensional genomic, transcriptomic, and other molecular datasets (e.g., WGS/WES, RNA-seq, scRNA-seq).
- Perform data curation and QC, alignment, variant and copy-number calling, expression quantification, downstream statistical analyses, and visualization.
- Review relevant literature, interpret findings in context, and recommend analytical approaches or follow-up studies.
Pipeline Development and Automation:
- Design, implement, and maintain reproducible NGS and multi-omics pipelines using Python, R, and workflow tools (e.g., Snakemake, Nextflow, shell scripts) on HPC systems.
- Automate routine analyses, monitor pipeline performance, and handle error logging and recovery.
- Apply best practices for version control, documentation, data integrity, and reproducibility.
Collaboration and Scientific Support:
- Work closely with investigators, clinicians, and lab members to define analytical needs, interpret results, and provide computational support.
- Participate in project meetings and communicate analytical findings to multidisciplinary research teams.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare analysis reports, workflow documentation, figures, tables, and other materials as needed for grants, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Ensure clarity, completeness, and reproducibility of all analytical deliverables.Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's Degree Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or related field.
Preferred: Master's Degree in a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: None.
Preferred: Machine Learning, Computational, Bioinformatics, PyTorch experience.
