The Donor Operations department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a vital role in supporting patient care by ensuring a safe, reliable blood supply for patients undergoing treatment. The Northwest location serves as a key community-based collection site, offering donors a convenient way to contribute while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer service.

This Blood Donor Technician position offers the opportunity to work in a patient- and donor-facing role where compassion, technical skill, and customer service come together to make a meaningful impact. You will be part of a collaborative team responsible for delivering a positive donor experience while supporting lifesaving blood collection efforts.

In this role, you will perform pre-donation screening, venipuncture, and post-donation care, ensuring all activities are conducted in accordance with established SOPs, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines. You will accurately document donor information, monitor for adverse reactions, and address non-routine situations with professionalism and attention to donor safety.

You will also support daily operations and workflow, including maintaining equipment, assisting with setup and breakdown of collection areas (including mobile events when applicable), and ensuring quality control processes are followed. Your ability to stay organized and maintain accuracy in documentation is essential to maintaining compliance and operational efficiency.

A strong emphasis is placed on customer service and donor engagement. You will interact directly with donors, creating a welcoming and professional environment while actively supporting donor recruitment efforts. Your communication skills, professionalism, and ability to build rapport will directly influence donor retention and overall experience.

Success in this role requires adaptability, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment while consistently delivering high-quality service. You will also contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on processes and maintaining required competencies and certifications.

**The ideal candidate will have phlebotomy experience. The hours are 8:30am - 5pm**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs all Donor Operations Processes according to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). 
- Performs pre-donation screening, venipuncture, and post venipuncture care of donors in accordance with policies, procedures, and protocols. 
- Remains knowledgeable of all policies, procedures, and protocols. 
- Complies with existing policies, procedures and protocols including requirements as specified in the Safety Program. 
- Reports any requested donor results, reactions, and adverse events according to SOP. 
- Ensures quality control data is accurate, complete, and documented accordingly. 
- Adheres to all safety and regulatory guidelines. 
- Maintains upkeep of assigned departmental equipment. 
- Assists with the loading, unloading, set-up, and tear-down of equipment at mobile donor collection locations. 
- Accurately and legibly completes donor records in a timely manner. 
- Identifies and addresses non-routine situations arising during phlebotomy procedures and reports them to appropriate leadership. 
- Maintains an acceptable level of proficiency and competency. 
- Assists other team members in maintaining smooth workflow and processes. 
- Actively recruits donors at donor sites.

Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external. 
- Demonstrates strong level of customer service skills and customer service focus. 
- Embraces the roles and responsibilities of the Customer Service Program. 
- Ensures all encounters, verbal, written and silent (body language), with internal and external customers are professional and respectful.

Participates in procedures, policies, and tools to enhance donor environment functioning while ensuring a positive experience for all involved. 
- Utilizes the ten-foot rule, greeting everyone in a professional and respectful manner. 
- Provides feedback when deficiencies or discrepancies in process performance observed. Offers recommendations for process improvement. 
- Ensures individual competency requirements maintained including required licensures and continuing education.

Education

Required:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred:
• Associate's Degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician Program OR
• Completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program

Work Experience

Required:
• Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory

• With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required

Licenses and Certifications

Required:
• TDL – Texas Drivers License: Class A, B, or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried (within 90 Days)
• Good driving record as verified with the Texas Department of Transportation (Upon Hire)

Preferred (upon hire):
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) AND
• CPT – Phlebotomy Technician Certification: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• DPT-ASCP – Donor Phlebotomy Technician: Donor Phlebotomy certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• American Certification Agency (ACA) OR
• National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
