JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Medication-Related Charging        Maintains the Pharmacy Charge Description Master (CDM) within the electronic health record for the Division of Pharmacy in collaboration with the Information Services and Revenue Cycle partners.
           Conducts weekly pharmacy billing validation and encourages pharmacy purchasing practices to reduce charging variability and errors.
           Responds to medication-related charging inquiries, supports payer defense audits, and assists with payer drug denials.
           Monitors processes for pharmacy charge capture accuracy to prevent and correct over and undercharging through work queues and reports. 
           Prepares corrective action plans when charge errors are identified.
           Participates in regular HCPCS updates, charge modifier maintenance, and support of other payer requirements.
           Oversees and optimizes medication-related charging for waste.
           Supports pharmacy charging-related and revenue capture audits and promotes billing compliance.
           Maintains documentation around pharmacy charging and billing practices and standards.
           Collaborates with and provides guidance for the pharmacy charging analysts and serves as a resource for troubleshooting.

 

Clinical Content Management       Supports the build and maintenance of medication-related content in the electronic health record (EHR) to assure safe and appropriate use of medications.
           Coordinates and/or contributes to EHR governance committees related to medication build, medication lists, and other committees related to medication use. 
           Supports the vetting of medication-related EHR change requests and utilizes necessary reporting and analytics tools as needed.
           Participates in development of medication use-related workflow design and build in the EHR.
           Serves as a liaison between Information Services and the Division of Pharmacy and/or other healthcare professionals.
           Participates in the development and maintenance of internal reference documents used to guide EHR medication build content (eg, filter, tubing, dose standardization charts).
           Proactively monitors for and promotes new EHR solutions and developments to improve the medication use process.

 

Process Improvement, Team Support, and Training      Oversees, conducts, and/or supports process improvement changes to the organization’s medication‐use system through optimization of technology and automation and use of effective project management skills.
           Investigates and responds to safety events related to roles and responsibilities of team.  Response to safety events may include identification of opportunities to improve EHR medication build, decision support, and workflows.
           Provides effective training related to technology and automation to students, residents, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.  Assists in the development of workflow tip sheets and training materials.
           Provides support and cross-coverage for other informatics team members based on the present needs and priorities.

 

Clinical Decision Support               Participates in development, monitoring, evaluation, and optimization of medication-related decision support in the EHR and other ancillary systems.
           Vets new and modification requests for medication-related clinical decision support tools in collaboration with stakeholders and IS teams.
           Partners with drug database and decision support vendor(s) for troubleshooting and evaluation of new solutions.
           Stewards, develops and tests, as well as maintains documentation of any pharmacy-related decision support build.
           Coordinates and/or participates in governance committees related to clinical decision support such as the Medication-Related Clinical Decision Support Committee.
           Oversees monitoring, reporting, and analytics of medication-related decision support used for optimization.

 

Infusion Smart Pumps        Participates in the development, monitoring, and optimization of infusion pump medication libraries with the goal of improving medication safety. 
           Leads efforts to improve the use of infusion pumps including pump selection, implementation, maintenance, and optimization in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external vendors. 
           Supports infusion pump reporting and analytics requests.
           Provides other clinical support and troubleshooting for infusion pumps and associated workflows as needed.
           Aids in the development of education and supports change management related to infusion pumps.
           Assists in determining infusion pump inventory needs and promotes stewardship in collaboration with internal stakeholders, such as Materials Management, Clinical Engineering, and other Operational Leaders.

REQUIREMENTS

 Education: Pharm.D degree.

 Preferred Education: Doctorate (Professional)

 Certification: All of the following:
Texas State Board of Pharmacy Pharmacist license within 90 days of job entry. Employees in Clinical Programs department (162400) must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of job entry.

 Preferred Certification: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS), EPIC Certification, and Board of Pharmaceutical Specialty Certification (BCPS)

 Experience: Pharmacy Practice Residency (PGY 1) and Residency in the area of specialization (PGY 2).  Experience as a clinical pharmacist in the area of specialization may substitute for the required residency on a one-to-one basis. 
Preferred Experience: Pharmacy Informatics, Drug Information, and/or Medication Safety experience
Three years hospital pharmacy experience
Proficiency with Epic Willow and/or Beacon applications
