Research Data Coordinator - GI Medical Oncology


The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The GI Medical Oncology program supports clinical and translational research focused on advancing innovative treatments and improving outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. The Research Data Coordinator plays an important role in supporting research activities through data collection, documentation, biospecimen management, and patient coordination.

The Research Data Coordinator works closely with investigators, research staff, clinicians, patients, sponsors, and collaborators to ensure accurate research records, efficient workflows, and successful execution of research initiatives. The Research Data Coordinator contributes directly to the mission of improving patient outcomes through high-quality cancer research.


The ideal candidate will have experience supporting clinical research activities, research data management, biospecimen collection and tracking, quality control processes, and patient coordination. Preferred qualifications include experience with data abstraction, medical terminology, research documentation, multidisciplinary collaboration, effective communication, and workflow improvement.


Minimum $21.15/hour – Midpoint $26.44/hour – Maximum $31.73/hour


Work Location: GI Medical Oncology – Hybrid – Houston, TX

Responsibilities
Research Data Collection & Management
• Abstract clinical and research data from Epic, external medical records, laboratory reports, spreadsheets, treatment records, pathology reports, imaging reports, and other source documentation.
• Collect, verify, and enter data into research databases and electronic data capture systems.
• Perform data collection and entry into electronic forms and data portals as required.
• Maintain accurate research databases and ensure data integrity across study-related activities.
• Gather pertinent information through review of medical charts, records, manuscripts, reports, grants, protocols, and supporting documentation.
• Compile research data and prepare ad hoc reports as requested.
 

Data Quality, Documentation & Compliance
• Perform quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure research data completeness, consistency, and accuracy.
• Review and verify database entries to maintain high-quality research records.
• Resolve data discrepancies and respond to investigator, sponsor, collaborator, and regulatory queries.
• Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready study documentation and research records.
• Ensure compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and research requirements.
• Respond to data-related inquiries while maintaining ongoing data quality standards.
• Develop and maintain systems for processing and tracking research paperwork and documentation.
 

Patient Coordination & Biospecimen Management
• Educate and consent patients for research participation and biospecimen collection activities.
• Coordinate, order, collect, document, and track biospecimens and research data from patients.
• Document research activities within the medical record.
• Pend orders for coordinating care teams and follow up to ensure timely completion.
• Request, collect, transport, process, store, ship, and track blood, tissue, and other research specimens.
• Accession materials into the appropriate laboratory system according to study requirements.
• Maintain accurate logs of sample collection, storage, shipment, and disposition.
• Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.
• Maintain an organized inventory room and specimen management processes.
 

Research Operations, Collaboration & Program Support
• Request, receive, review, and organize patient records and supporting documentation from outside healthcare institutions.
• Serve as a liaison among patients, investigators, collaborators, sponsors, and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
• Assist with the design, workflow development, implementation, and initiation of research projects and clinical trials.
• Support principal investigators with abstracts, manuscripts, grants, correspondence, journal submissions, and research reports.
• Maintain communication with internal and external institutions as required.
• Attend departmental and staff meetings and remain accountable for assigned responsibilities.
• Coordinate coverage and communicate appropriately during absences.
• Contribute to programmatic initiatives through effective communication, collaboration, and process improvement.
 

Training, Education & Continuous Improvement
• Support onboarding and orientation activities for faculty, research staff, and collaborators.
• Assist with instruction on research databases, data collection procedures, workflows, and institutional processes.
• Utilize available resources to maximize efficiency and improve workflows.
• Support program vision, mission, strategies, and organizational objectives.
• Represent the program while demonstrating professionalism and service excellence.
• Demonstrate high levels of professionalism, accountability, and customer service.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Two years Related experience or n
