The Financial Analyst role supports the Finance and Analytics department in advancing institutional financial stewardship and project management excellence. As part of this team, the Financial Analyst contributes to capital planning, reporting, data analysis, and operational support that enable informed decision‑making across high‑priority initiatives.


The Financial Analyst position is based within MD Anderson Cancer Center, a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Financial Analyst will work closely with financial and operational stakeholders to ensure accuracy, consistency, and efficiency across capital processes and core financial functions.


The ideal candidate brings experience in financial analysis, project management, and health care finance, with strong analytical skills and familiarity with systems such as PeopleSoft and Hyperion/Essbase. A background in capital planning or oncology-related operations is beneficial, along with experience preparing presentations, managing workflows, and supporting complex financial processes.

The typical work schedule is 8am–5pm Monday–Friday.
Work Location: Hybrid Onsite/Remote.

Salary Range: Minimum - $68,500 / Midpoint - $85,500 / Maximum - $102,500.00

Responsibilities


Capital Process

  • Support capital planning activities through project and process management, financial modeling, and reporting
  • Generate recommendations and standardize criteria and calculations
  • Maintain activity calendars and assist with presentation development for committees
  • Evaluate automation technology and serve as the primary resource for batch workflow management
  • Forecast future capital spending across facilities, IT, research and clinical equipment, and soft‑funded capital
  • Manage end‑to‑end lifecycle of Chart Field Strings and Capital Plan IDs, including setup, funding changes, reconciliation, close‑out, and controls
  • Coordinate annualized capital planning processes using best practices for centralization and standardization
  • Develop tools that enhance infrastructure and automate workflows
  • Collaborate with finance counterparts on long‑term forecasting and planning
  • Support coordination with clinical, research, and administrative leaders to guide future growth discussions 

Support

  • Prepare presentations and coordinate/schedule meetings with stakeholders
  • Document meeting minutes and capture discussion points, action items, and decisions
  • Provide administrative support including file organization and correspondence management
  • Promote efficient communication and collaboration across groups

     

Reporting

  • Produce internal Finance, Analytics & Technology reports related to capital spending and variance analysis
  • Create presentation materials in a coherent, efficient format with consistent formatting
  • Maintain version control across all reports and presentations
  • Ensure accuracy and alignment across reporting cycles and institutional standards

Financial Reconciliation

  • Perform advanced analysis and summarize financial and metric activities
  • Reconcile capital equipment and long‑term capital plan funding sources
  • Follow internal control policies and ensure accurate reconciliation procedures
  • Partner with general accounting to resolve reconciling items promptly
  • Maintain knowledge of financial requirements and internal control best practices

Data Analysis & Support / Special Projects

  • Extract and analyze data in a timely manner as requested by management
  • Maintain financial master data in partnership with central finance teams
  • Strengthen data systems skills for platforms such as PeopleSoft and Hyperion/Essbase
  • Support ongoing and special projects aligned with department objectives
  • Provide back‑up support for other analysts in the Finance, Analytics & Technology team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Project Management, or related field.
  • Preferred: Master of Business Administration

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in finance, accounting, project management, or related field. 
  • Preferred: 4 years of experience evaluating capital expenditure proposals, assessing their financial viability, and making recommendations for capital allocation based on strategic objectives and financial metrics. Experience with cost accounting and decision support with a major academic medical center, consulting firm or related industry. Experience with business plans and providing customized FP&A support to administrative, clinical and research functions in a major academic medical center.
