The Access Operations Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays an essential role in helping patients connect quickly and smoothly with the care they need. The department focuses on scheduling, patient support, and improving operational flow so clinical teams can devote more time to patient care and continue delivering exceptional cancer treatment.

The International Patient Assistant supports international new patients through the intake, orientation, and care process at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This role ensures accurate, efficient, and courteous access to services while delivering a positive patient experience. 
Responsibilities include providing high-quality customer service to patients, providers, and referral sources; scheduling and registering new patients; verifying insurance; securing authorizations; and advising patients of their financial responsibility. The role also supports organizational goals by contributing to strong access performance and phone service outcomes. In addition, this position provides coaching and mentoring to Associate Patient Access Representatives and supports department-wide change initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be bilingual in English and Hindi. Experience working with international patients in a healthcare environment is also preferred. 

This is a hybrid position and may require flexibility to be onsite as needed to support business operations.

Hourly Breakdown of salary range: Minimum $25.48 - Midpoint $31.73 - Maximum $37.98

Job-Specific Competencies
International Patient Liaison

  • Coordinates care services for international patients.
  • Communicates with patients, referring physicians, and embassies to collect required demographic and medical information for triage.
  • Works with medical directors and advanced clinical practitioners regarding patient acceptance and patient-related issues.
  • Demonstrates verbal fluency in two or more languages, including English.
  • Maintains current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provides information to patients and families regarding Houston-area accommodations.
  • Coordinates transportation between the airport and hospital or hotel.
  • Assists patients with internal systems, including financial evaluation, insurance, and billing.

Patient Access Responsibilities

  • Applies medical acceptance criteria accurately when screening and scheduling new patient appointments to support efficient clinic operations.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally during all patient interactions.
  • Follows customer service standards and makes every effort to meet reasonable patient requests.
  • Routes patients to the appropriate destination using warm transfers whenever possible.
  • Supports the implementation of new tools, workflows, and operational models that improve access to care and staff efficiency.
  • Accurately documents communications with payors, patients, and clinical teams.
  • Captures information according to established guidelines while demonstrating appropriate prioritization and urgency.

     

Registration Responsibilities

  • Collects complete and accurate demographic and financial information during the intake process.
  • Verifies information during new patient registration to ensure compliance with required forms and consents.
  • Shares financial information provided by Financial Clearance staff, including cost estimates, discounts, and available financial assistance.

Oral and Written Communication

  • Uses clear and professional verbal and written communication with patients, referral sources, physicians, and clinical staff.
  • Identifies and communicates barriers related to access or financial clearance.
  • Responds to voicemail and MyChart messages within one business day.
  • Answers incoming phone calls promptly, within three rings.
  • Follows customer service guidelines and ensures appropriate routing using warm transfers whenever possible.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Required: Associate's Degree
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: Four years of experience working with international patients or customers.
  • May substitute Associate's degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
  • Verbal fluency in two or more languages (English being one of the languages).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
