SUMMARY

The Legal Officer, Patient Care & Hospital Operations provides professional legal advice and counsel regarding patient care matters, hospital and clinic operational issues, and other general matters handled by the Legal Services Department.  The Legal Officer is also responsible for conducting legal research and analysis and drafting memoranda on a variety of legal issues affecting The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.  The Legal Officer also participates on hospital committees. 

 

KEY FUNCTIONS

  • Provides professional legal advice and counsel regarding patient care matters and hospital and clinic operational issues, including but not limited to informed consent, advance directives, end of life care, EMTALA, patient privacy, regulatory and accreditation requirements and survey preparation and response, health care provider scope of practice, and medical staff bylaws and credentialing;
  • Works closely with the Risk Management team to help manage and prevent risk within the institution;
  • Reviews, revises, and helps draft institutional and department policies and procedures;
  • Presents educational programs to staff on subjects relating to patient care and hospital and clinic operational issues, including related changes in Texas or Federal law;
  • Assists with expanding the institution’s virtual care capabilities;
  • Assists institutional custodians respond to requests for records (such as the Departments of Health Information Management, Physician Billing Services, Pathology, Diagnostic Imaging, and Human Resources);
  • Reviews and responds to requests for service of legal documents, as necessary; and assists with responding to various licensing board complaints and investigations, as needed.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Four years as an attorney, including one year of legal experience in hospital operations and health law. 
  • Excellent management, organizational, communication, interpersonal, research, writing, and negotiation skills in a fast-paced, customer-service-oriented, intellectually challenging and highly diverse hospital or academic health center.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.)
  • Must be currently licensed by the State Bar of Texas or complete such licensing requirements within one year of date of employment.
