Medical Technician II - Cytogenetics - Tues - Sat - Mid-Shift

As a Medical Technician 2 with our Cytogenetics department, you’ll play an important role in the specialized laboratory work that supports cancer diagnosis and patient care. Your expertise will help ensure patient specimens are accurately processed, clinical testing is performed according to established procedures, and high-quality results are delivered to the teams caring for patients at one of the world’s leading cancer centers.

You’ll perform tissue culture, harvest, slide staining and scanning while evaluating specimen type, disease state, culture conditions, testing requirements, metaphase preparations, and appropriate staining for analysis. You’ll also evaluate specimen integrity, troubleshoot pre-analytical issues, and ensure required quality control and quality assurance activities are completed and documented.

You’ll prioritize work to meet productivity goals, help manage inventory and supplies, maintain instruments and equipment, and stay current on procedures and policies. You’ll also have the opportunity to share your expertise by instructing new personnel and students on cytogenetic theories, techniques, and processes.

Job Specific Competencies

Accessions, processes, and perform clinical testing.
- Correctly receives, accessions, processes, and assures proper identification of specimen
- Independently performs tissue culture, harvest, and slide staining and scanning, including analysis of: -Specimen type -Disease state -Culture conditions -Type of clinical tests needed -Appropriate condition of metaphase preparation on slides -Appropriate staining necessary for metaphase analysis 
- Evaluates specimen integrity necessary for clinical testing and notifies appropriate personnel of unacceptable specimens in accordance with departmental procedure 
- Acquires and maintains proficiency in computer functions 
- Independently performs work without undue reliance on others and assists co-workers as time permits 
- Keeps abreast of new procedures and policies 
- Performs and documents all required quality control/quality assurance 
- Readily instructs new personnel and students regarding theories, techniques, and processes

Maintains organized processes, inventory, instruments and equipment to provide optimal and timely patient results. 
- Prioritizes and organizes workflow meeting productivity goals of the section 
- Remains knowledgeable of processes and pre-analytical procedures enabling efficient trouble shooting and problem solving 
- Assists with monitoring and documenting of the sections inventory control system while assuring effective use of supplies.

Performs all tasks in positive manner to result in appropriate positive customer service. 
- Complies with section's telephone courtesy policies and procedures 
- Reports results of problem resolutions to callers in accordance with section's policies 
- Demonstrates cooperation when working with both internal and external customers
