NGS Senior Research Assistant
SUMMARY
The Advanced Technology Genomics Core is the primary sequencing and microarray facility for research at MD Anderson Cancer Center. As such, the facility provides essential genomic analysis services to support cancer center members in basic science, translational, and population-based research programs. The mission of the ATGC is to support cancer research by providing investigators with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and a high level of technical expertise in a centralized facility.
The primary purpose of the Senior Research Assistant position is to provide technical assistance in carrying out research projects in the institution’s Advanced Technology Genomics Core.
The Senior Research Assistant will have experience with Next Generation Sequencing, Library Preparation, and Laboratory Information Management Systems, and excellent communication and customer service skills.
KEY FUNCTIONS
1. Expertise and Specialization
- Apply molecular biology skills to perform sample and library QC, PCR, qPCR, exome capture, cDNA synthesis and NGS library preparation in the facility’s Next Generation Sequencing service.
- Maintain detailed and well-organized records of protocols performed and results obtained.
2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate laboratory instruments, including bench-top sequencers.
- Perform instrument maintenance as scheduled or required.
3. Customer Service (Service Cores)
- Follow Core guidelines regarding order processing.
- Interact with client user groups and alert supervisor to problems/concerns.
- Excellent customer service skills are essential.
4.Other Duties
- Cross-train in other ATGC services and serve as a service back up as required.
- Assist in general laboratory operations as required.
EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
Preferred: Master's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, one year of required experience.
Preferred: Prior experience in Next Gen Sequencing, Illumina NGS Library Preparation is a must. Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems, ONT library and sequencing, and core lab is a plus.
This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening.
