The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. Within the Hospital Billing & Collections department, the PBS Billing Specialist plays a critical role in supporting revenue cycle operations through accurate commercial billing, claims follow-up, denial management, and payment resolution activities. The PBS Billing Specialist works collaboratively with internal departments to ensure claims are processed in accordance with regulatory requirements and payer guidelines.
 

At UT MD Anderson, the PBS Billing Specialist contributes to the financial integrity of the organization by ensuring timely claim submission, effective account follow-up, and accurate billing practices. The PBS Billing Specialist serves as a subject matter resource for commercial billing processes involving stem cell transplant and cellular therapy claims while supporting the organization's mission through operational excellence.


The ideal candidate brings progressive hospital billing experience with a strong background in commercial billing processes and payer follow-up activities. Preferred qualifications include experience with commercial hospital billing as well as stem cell transplant and cellular therapy claims. Candidates should possess the education or equivalent experience necessary to support advanced billing operations, denial management, appeals processing, and revenue cycle performance.


Salary Information (40-hour work week): Minimum: $60,500 annually | Midpoint: $75,500 annually | Maximum: $90,500 annually
Work Location: Remote (within Texas only) -Must be able to come onsite as needed.  Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm.

Responsibilities


Commercial Billing & Claims Processing • Complete claims within the daily billing workqueue • Process commercial stem cell transplant and cellular therapy claims in accordance with regulatory guidelines • Ensure all claims are filed within established timely filing limits • Correct commercial billing rejections to facilitate claim submission • Complete daily response and rejection reports


Denial Management & Appeals • Process appeals related to commercial claims • Investigate, analyze, and resolve commercial claim denials • Identify barriers to reimbursement and take appropriate corrective action • Notify management immediately of issues causing delays in payment or claim resolution • Recommend edits and claim corrections needed to expedite payment


Account Follow-Up & Collections • Perform timely follow-up activities on commercial accounts • Work accounts identified on Aged Trial Balance Reports, workqueues, and Denials Reports • Analyze account activity through review of system comments and billing history • Ensure follow-up activities are completed accurately and within required timeframes • Document all collection efforts with clear, concise, and complete notes in the system


Billing Accuracy & Compliance • Maintain knowledge of the UB-04 claim form • Utilize modifier logic, HCPCS/CPT codes, and revenue line code descriptions appropriately • Ensure late and unbilled charges are identified, accounted for, and resolved • Stay current on all Commercial Bulletins and Provider Updates • Assure work quality through proofreading, monitoring work output, and system analysis


Collaboration & Communication • Communicate with revenue departments to validate and resolve claim discrepancies • Partner with internal stakeholders to support accurate billing and reimbursement processes • Escalate payment, rejection, and claims-processing issues to management as appropriate • Maintain high standards of accuracy, completeness, and accountability • Perform other duties as assigned

 

EDUCATION

  • Required: Associate's Degree or
  • Required: Equivalent college credit.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: 5 years Progressively responsible billing experience with three years in governmental hospital billing.
  • Preferred: 5 years progressively responsible billing experience with three years in commercial hospital billing and experience with stem cell transplants and cellular therapy claims 
  • May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
