Summary

The primary purpose of the Program Director, Philanthropy communications, position is to define, manage and implement MD Anderson’s digital communications strategy in support of its philanthropic campaign(s). Oversight includes development and management of interactive Campaign microsite and supporting content.

The ideal candidate would possess a strong background in developing and executing comprehensive editorial strategies that align with organizational goals. They would have hands-on experience with content management systems (CMS), ensuring efficient creation, organization, and publication of content, as well as being adept at working with executive leadership and senior management. Additionally, they would bring a wealth of experience in communications tailored to fundraising initiatives.

This position will require local travel to attend events for philanthropic campaigns.

Key Functions

Program/Project Management:

  • Manages MD Anderson’s digital communications strategy and programs in support of philanthropic campaign(s).
  • Leads the effort to define, develop and implement an interactive fundraising campaign microsite.
  • Develops and manages content to support the Campaign microsite, as well as for distribution via mobile applications, MDAnderson.org, web applications, social media, mass marketing emails and the institution’s Annual Report.  
  • Proactively tracks down communications in support of MD Anderson’s fundraising strategy and goals.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in digital communications best practices, including Search Engine Optimization and accessibility.
  • Consistently tracks and analyzes success of programs, projects and initiatives, provides regular status reports. Identifies as well as solves potential problems.

 

Writing/Editing:

  • Writes and edits fundraising-focused content for distribution via MD Anderson digital platforms.
  • Reviews and edits all digital campaigns and content supporting MD Anderson fundraising, including mass emails targeted to donor subscribers.
  • Ensures clear, consistent writing and editing in all work products.
  • Ensures alignment with MD Anderson voice and tone as well as brand standards.
  • Command of Associated Press and MD Anderson style.

Strategic Counsel:

  • Acts as a consultant to MD Anderson Institutional Affairs and Philanthropy employees regarding digital communications best practices in support of fundraising goals.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with client group(s) to better understand roles and processes.
  • Routinely attends meetings with client leadership, attends key customer meetings and is available for consultation, as needed. 

People Management:

  • Directs work of senior communications specialist as well as external service providers and contracted personnel.  

Other duties as assigned. 

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Preferred:  Master's degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Experience

Required: Seven years of experience public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field and three years of lead/project management/supervisory/management experience.  With preferred degree, five years of required experience.  
Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
