Research Assistant I

MISSION STATEMENT 
The mission of The University of Texas M. D. SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Research Assistant I position is to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects. Coordinates and conducts experiments and carries out research projects. Constructs, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment.  Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.  Records and evaluates data obtained in accordance with methods requested. Impacts laboratory research activities.


KEY FUNCTIONS

•    About 25% of the individual’s effort will be the oversight of the general management of the laboratory’s mouse colony.
•    Can accurately record phenotypic data which include, but are not limited to, weighing and describing tissues and tumors as part of necropsies, collecting blood samples, and administering medications or radiation therapy to animals.
•    Should have some special skills such as tumor xenografts, tail vein injection, intestinal crypt isolation, and necropsy are highly desirable.
•    50% of the individual’s effort will be performing key experiments related to the analysis of cell line models of cancer and human diseases. The project will involve the analysis of gene expression and proteomic changes in cells and tissues using various methods including, but not limited to, western blots, quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry, and gene expression profiling.
•    Will utilize various basic molecular biology techniques including gene cloning, and EV purification, cell culture experiments, TFF chromatography.
•    25% will be towards Maintaining laboratory environment including ordering of supplies and organization of supplies and equipment
•    Maintain clear and accurate records of laboratory data, both written and electronic, accessible at all times by the supervisor.
•    Communicate effectively with supervisor through informal discussion on a daily basis, biweekly meeting, laboratory meetings, and department seminars.
•    Collaborate and communicate effectively with other members in the lab.
•    Sometime may need to serve as Lab Rep on department Lab Council by timely and consistent attendance at all meetings and communicating clearly all current and new policies, guidelines and information back to all lab staff.


 

Education Required - Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences. 

Experience Required - No experience. 

Experience Preferred - Mice handling

This position may be responsible for maintaining the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, as defined in Section 113.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code and therefore may require routine reviews and screening.
