Research Assistant I - Experimental Radiation Oncology

SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Research Assistant I position is to conduct experiments and carry out research projects in varied areas of biology and biomedical or related scientific fields. Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment. Records and evaluates data in accordance with methods requested. Impacts laboratory research activities.
KEY FUNCTIONS / JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Coordinates and conducts experiments and carries out research projects in the areas of DNA damage pathways, molecular mechanisms of genomic instability and tumorigenesis, tumor-suppressing qualities of the mitotic checkpoint protein Chfr, and the role of protein deacetylase SIRT1 in aging and tumorigenesis.

Constructs, assembles, and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment.

Assists in experiments that require knowledge of molecular biology, cell-based assays, and tissue culture techniques.

Maintains accurate, detailed records of the protocols and experimental data.

Compiles, writes, and submits work reports to the supervisor.

Orders centralized supplies, monitors lab expenses, and communicates cost-effective alternatives.

Organizes and develops training to ensure that lab members have current knowledge of specialized lab procedures.

Performs laboratory maintenance such as maintaining/cleaning equipment, organizing repair procedures, maintaining lab stocks, managing chemical inventory and safety records, and providing general lab support as needed.

Helps orient and train new staff or students.

Assists faculty with submission of MTAs, IBCs, IACUC, etc.

Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Required: Bachelor’s degree with major course work one of the basic sciences.
EXPERIENCE
Required: None
Preferred: Some experience in scientific or experimental research work.
