Research Assistant I

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is home to the Myeloma Tissue Bank, a specialized research environment focused on collecting, processing, and storing biospecimens to advance understanding and treatment of myeloma. The Research Assistant I will support critical laboratory and operational workflows that enable high-quality specimen handling and cutting-edge research initiatives within the Myeloma Tissue Bank. The Research Assistant I plays an important role in ensuring accurate sample processing, data integrity, and adherence to research protocols.

The Research Assistant I will collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and gain exposure to advanced laboratory techniques within a highly respected research organization.

The ideal candidate will have foundational scientific education with preferred laboratory experience, including processing clinical samples or any research laboratory experience. Exposure to molecular and cellular biology techniques, strong attention to detail, and the ability to follow established protocols are valued. Licenses and certifications are not specified, and training will be provided.

Responsibilities
Laboratory Skills
• Support daily operations of myeloma biospecimen banking through intake, processing, and storage of research samples
• Receive and manage patient-derived samples including blood, bone marrow aspirates, and tumor tissue
• Coordinate with research nursing staff to obtain necessary biospecimens
• Maintain accurate, detailed, and well-organized laboratory records at all times
• Operate laboratory equipment for biospecimen processing and storage
• Demonstrate strong attention to detail and consistent alertness during laboratory procedures

Molecular & Cellular Biology
• Perform basic molecular and cellular biology techniques in accordance with established SOPs
• Process bone marrow and other biological specimens for downstream applications
• Isolate PBMCs and BMNCs from collected specimens
• Conduct serum extraction, DNA preparation, and RNA extraction
• Prepare samples for single-cell RNA sequencing including single-cell suspension preparation
• Execute GEM generation and cDNA amplification processes
• Use precise pipetting techniques requiring strong manual dexterity and visual acuity

Reporting & Collaboration
• Adhere fully to research protocols and standard operating procedures
• Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and present findings when required
• Maintain thorough handwritten and digital records for all assigned protocols
• Collaborate with laboratory directors and team members to troubleshoot experimental workflows
• Identify and resolve issues encountered during laboratory processes

• Listen actively and respond clearly and promptly to stakeholder needs
• Provide personalized support and anticipate unspoken needs when possible

• Maintain composure and professionalism in all interactions and escalate issues when necessary

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Basic Science.
