Research Assistant I

Within the Department of Radiation Oncology - Research, the Research Assistant I role supports innovative laboratory and translational research efforts that advance the understanding of cancer biology and improve patient outcomes.
The Research Assistant I provides technical and coordination support for a variety of research projects through biospecimen processing, molecular laboratory techniques, data management, and experimental analysis. The Research Assistant I works closely with investigators and research staff to maintain laboratory operations and support scientific discovery. The Research Assistant I contributes directly to research initiatives that impact cancer treatment and translational medicine at UT MD Anderson.
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacology, Physiology, Computer Science, Natural Science, Applied Science, or a related research discipline. Preferred qualifications include a medical degree or master's degree in one of the listed scientific fields. Individuals with strong laboratory skills, scientific curiosity, attention to detail, and an interest in molecular biomarker research, biospecimen management, and data analysis will be well suited for this role.
Minimum $18.99/hour – Midpoint $23.80/hour – Maximum $28.61/hour

Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Biospecimen Processing • Process routine biospecimens for laboratory protocols and research studies • Isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from collected specimens • Separate plasma and serum samples for laboratory analysis • Prepare, label, catalog, and store biospecimens for long-term preservation • Manage biospecimen inventory and database records according to laboratory SOPs
Data Collection, Documentation & Reporting • Maintain accurate and detailed protocol documentation and experimental records • Record and manage biospecimen and biomarker data • Collect and organize clinical data for laboratory protocols and clinical studies • Evaluate and document data obtained from experiments and research activities • Compile, prepare, and submit reports and updates to the supervisor
Molecular & Cellular Research Techniques • Perform DNA and RNA extraction procedures • Conduct genotyping and immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining assays • Apply flow cytometry techniques to support research studies • Perform cell culture procedures and mouse handling activities • Support laboratory experiments using established scientific methodologies
Molecular Biomarker Analysis • Conduct experiments related to molecular biomarker research • Evaluate gene mutations and gene expression in cells and tissues • Perform quantitative PCR (qPCR) analyses • Conduct Western blotting and gene expression profiling procedures • Support DNA sequencing and RNA sequencing projects
Research Support, Communication & Technology • Utilize Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, REDCap, R, Python, Java, and JavaScript for research activities • Prepare figures, tables, data summaries, and supporting materials for publications and presentations • Contribute content supporting manuscript preparation and grant applications • Communicate research progress through daily discussions, laboratory meetings, and departmental seminars
• Perform other duties as assigned
