Genetics is a basic science department located in the George and Cynthia Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building at the world-renowned UT MD Anderson in the heart of the Texas Medical Center. The focus is on advancing knowledge of the molecular genetic mechanisms that regulate normal and abnormal cellular processes.

The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to provide sophisticated and technical laboratory work in medical and research related projects. The Research Assistant II will perform genotyping of mice, breeding and maintenance of colonies, in vitro cell culture, technical assistance with experiments involving flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, western blots, TILS generation, molecular biology techniques, cloning, transfection under the supervision of the principal investigator. The position will also be responsible for assisting and maintaining general laboratory operations including basic work as well as translational work within the lab program and with research collaborators.

The ideal candidate will possess experience working with mouse models, PCR genotyping, Western blotting, and flow cytometry. 

Salary Range (Hourly): Minimum $21.63 – Midpoint $27.16 – Maximum $32.69

Responsibilities

Basic Cellular & Molecular Biology Techniques
• Perform flow cytometry, TILS generation, expansion, and functional assays using T cells obtained from mice or cancer patients
• Conduct in vitro cell culture and functional/screening assays
• Handle fresh and paraffin-embedded surgical tissue specimens for research studies
• Prepare tissue slides and perform immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining using appropriate antibodies
• Support confocal microscopy studies and imaging activities
• Maintain and establish cell cultures using rigorous sterile techniques
• Observe and identify cellular changes under the microscope and assess cell counts and viability
• Prepare sterile media and solutions and purify cells using established laboratory methods
• Monitor cellular proliferation and activation using standard laboratory techniques
• Prepare cells for cryogenic storage and manage tissue culture supplies

Molecular Biology & Experimental Research
• Perform Southern, Northern, and Western blot analyses
• Conduct polymerase chain reaction procedures, cloning activities, transfections, and plasmid preparations
• Analyze reagents using SDS-PAGE and agarose gel techniques
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment including high-speed centrifuges, pH meters, and vacuum pumps
• Assist with translational laboratory projects and collaborative research studies
• Perform genotyping of mice and support experimental investigations under investigator supervision

Animal Care
• Breed and maintain mouse colonies for laboratory research programs
• Perform genotyping and colony management activities
• Distribute animals to laboratory personnel for approved experiments
• Maintain accurate and current inventories of existing animal colonies

Laboratory Safety & Equipment Maintenance
• Demonstrate and follow all laboratory safety precautions and procedures
• Complete required safety training and comply with institutional standards
• Handle, store, and dispose of radioactive, chemical, and biohazardous materials according to established guidelines
• Follow manufacturer recommendations for laboratory equipment handling and maintenance
• Maintain working knowledge of equipment operations and procedural manuals

Record Keeping, Data Collection & Communication
• Maintain accurate experimental records, protocols, and research data
• Prepare graphs, slides, tables, photographs, and computer-generated research materials
• Communicate findings and receive direction from the principal investigator and research colleagues
• Discuss project goals and experimental plans with supervisors
• Develop step-by-step written procedures before conducting experiments
• Review scientific literature and assist with implementing and modifying new procedures based on project needs
• Support general laboratory operations and perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION
• Required: Bachelor's Degree Basic Science
• Preferred: Master's Degree Basic Science and a Medical Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE
• Required: One year Scientific or experimental research work experience or No experience required with preferred degree
• Preferred: Experience with mouse models, PCR genotyping, Western blotting, and flow cytometry
