The Hematopathology Research Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center is dedicated to advancing the understanding of blood cancers through innovative translational research. The laboratory supports cutting-edge studies focused on hematologic malignancies by utilizing advanced technologies, including flow cytometry, to better understand disease biology and identify new approaches for diagnosis and treatment. Working alongside physicians, scientists, and research staff, this team plays an important role in translating scientific discoveries into future patient care advancements.

This Research Assistant II position offers an excellent opportunity for someone interested in building a career in laboratory research while supporting meaningful cancer research projects. The role is ideal for candidates with experience in laboratory techniques, flow cytometry, or specimen processing who enjoy working in a collaborative, research-focused environment.

In this role, you will support a variety of research laboratory functions, including performing routine flow cytometry experiments, antibody testing, research sample collection, specimen preparation and processing, and flow cytometry data analysis using specialized software. You will help ensure research samples are processed accurately and efficiently while contributing to studies that advance the understanding of hematologic diseases.

You will also play an important role in laboratory operations and maintenance, assisting with equipment maintenance, preparing the laboratory for inspections, maintaining laboratory stock chemicals, monitoring liquid nitrogen supplies for frozen sample storage, ordering laboratory supplies, and helping ensure the laboratory remains organized, compliant, and fully operational.

A strong emphasis is placed on data integrity and record keeping. You will maintain accurate records of laboratory experiments, document research activities, and manage sample information within the electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) system. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality research documentation are essential for success in this position.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and an interest in laboratory-based cancer research. Experience with flow cytometry, specimen handling, or research laboratory techniques is highly desirable, along with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative research team.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Research Laboratory Functions    

Perform routine flow cytometry experiments to include:

·         Antibody testing

·         Research sample collection

·         Research sample preparation

·         Research sample processing

·         Flow cytometry data analysis using software

General Laboratory Maintenance & Supplies   General Laboratory Maintenance & Supplies 

·        Maintenance of general lab equipment.

·         Prepares the lab for Lab inspections.

·         Prepares common laboratory stock chemicals; Submits all orders for the lab and maintains supplies inventory.

·         Monitors sufficient supply of liquid nitrogen to maintain the best temperature for frozen samples.

Record Keeping    

·         Record keeping of all lab work including experiments performed and database of samples received & processed in the ELN system.

Other duties as assigned

 

EDUCATION

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree Basic Science.
  • Preferred: Master's Degree Basic Science, PhD or Medical Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Required: 1 year Scientific or experimental research work experience or n

    o experience required with preferred degree.
