The primary purpose of the Research Nurse Manager position is to plan, direct, coordinate, and evaluate clinical management of research protocols and clinical research care systems for the department.  Manages overall operations, strategic planning, budgeting, quality assurance and administration of activities and personnel that impact research protocols and protocol patients, as well as development of assigned staff. 

Clinical Protocol Operation Management

Develop and administer a strategic plan to provide overall coordination and facilitation of clinical research activities and protocol patient care.

Ensure appropriate protocol assignments to research staff, based on a variety of criteria, such as length of experience, complexity of protocol, number of active patients, data requirements, etc.

Maintain open communication with physicians and research staff to ensure appropriate level of support for all research related activities.

Oversee the protocol-related research activity of supervisors, research nurses, and data management personnel to ensure knowledge of the research process, resources available, and compliance with all standards, policies, and quality measures.

Develop, communicate and administer clinical research policy and procedures to personnel in the research nursing area, in accordance with institutional and departmental, and federal policies and guidelines.

Maintain departmental Standard Operating Procedures for Clinical Research

Develop strategies to promote enrollment of diverse patient populations, consistently employing recruitment efforts that reflect creativity in the selection and utilization of a variety of methods available.

Collaborate with physicians, research nurses/supervisors, and protocol sponsors regarding protocol design, budgeting, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Oversee the department audit process to ensure the integrity of protocol management and data.


Oversee activities of research nurse supervisors in order to provide guidance, correction when needed, and coverage when short-staffed.

Participate in the interview and selection process for research personnel.

Develop plans and processes for integrating all aspects of the clinical research process and work to implement these processes.

Participate in fiscal planning and budgetary management of clinical research activities and staff, with emphasis on effective utilization of resources.

Complete performance evaluations of personnel directly supervised.

Communicate and administer departmental and institutional policy and procedures to personnel in the research nursing area. 

Professional Development

Coordinate the training and development of personnel in the research nursing area, with emphasis on effective orientation and continuing education.

Identify needs and provide training related to administration, management, and monitoring of patients on clinical trials.

Mentor and encourage clinical research and supervisory staff to develop through participation in professional organizations, serving on committees, attending journal presentations, seminars or conferences.

Ensure that research nurses and supervisors collect CEUs to meet Board of Nursing requirements.

Encourage research nurses/supervisors to keep curriculum vitae up-to-date to reflect participation in professional growth activities.

Ensure appropriate workload assignments to research personnel through communication with Research Nurse Supervisors.




Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.




Five years of registered nursing experience, to include two years of research nursing experience.

Two years of supervisory experience.

Required degree may be substituted for experience as a MDACC Research Nurse Supervisor on a one-to-one basis. 




Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.


American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
