The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Assists with clinical and operational management of research protocols. Impacts research protocols and patients in designated protocols. Scope of position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and requires adherence to the policies and procedures of the institution. Effectively conducts assigned operations of research protocols. Coordinates, evaluates and follows patient participation in clinical trials. Assists in the collection and evaluation of data. Under direction, performs protocol-specific clinical tasks including patient assessment, screening, ordering tests, collecting specimens and monitoring responses. May administer medications. Provides patient and family education. May provide professional and ancillary staff education concerning research protocols as required




Clinical Research Activities - Protocol Conduction:

Appropriately screens patients and reviews eligibility. 

Has basic understanding of disease-specific diagnosis and response criteria, as relates to eligibility. 

Ensures that patients meet eligibility. Follows policy, in the rare event it is needed, to obtain a PI override. 

Participates in the informed consent process according departmental and institutional policies and procedures. Re-consent patients per GCP and institutional policies and procedures. 

Understands protocol treatment. 

Completes clinic service requisitions (CSR) according to protocol treatment and follow-up assessments. 

Monitors patients and is able to identify adverse events and unexpected problems according to protocol treatment.  Reports serious adverse events following institutional policy. 

Documents protocol activities in the medical record.


Protocol Administration

Identifies and reports protocol deviations/violations. 

Assists the PI and other members of the research team in completing protocol continue reports to IRB and or FDA/IND. 

Assists the PI in responding to protocol contingencies.

Assists the PI with protocol completion (CNPE or termination). 

Assists the PI with protocol revisions. 

Data Management Activities:

Perform protocol data management related activities such as retrieving data from appropriated source.

Registration Adverse Events. 

Responsible for data collection and entry into PDMS if required by protocol. 

Attend Outcome Meetings for assigned protocols Understand the mission of the CIBMTR and NMDP. 


Knowledge / Administration:

Effectively communicates with members of the research team: PI, PA, APN, Inpatient and Outpatient Nurses, Business Center, Related and Unrelated Coordinators, Data Management team. 

Teaches patient about stem cell transplant, as it relates to protocol. This includes treatment regime, side effects, and requirements of follow-up. 



Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. 




One year of registered nursing experience. 


Prior Research Nurse experience.




Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). 

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.


American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
