SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Research Scientist position is to apply technical expertise and experience to coordinate, design, and carry out cancer research projects while following standard operating procedures for the laboratory.


JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Research Projects

  • Job Description: We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Research Scientist to participate in the development of molecular glues and related novel modalities. While we consider various backgrounds, a strong interest in understanding how small molecule tools work, and the desire to tackle a major problem of great significance, are absolutely essential. The position will allow the candidate to develop valuable new skills and experience in molecular glue discovery, assay development, target validation, targeted protein degradation, and chemical biology.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and participates in experiments on cancer research projects.
  • Adheres to all institutional guidelines for correct practice of laboratory safety and universal precautions standards.
  • Organizes, plans, and implements experiments under the direction of a professional staff member.
  • Functions in an independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments.

Equipment and Supply Management

  • Selects and purchases new equipment in consultation with other professional staff, and maintains technical equipment for the laboratory. Manages inventory as needed. Orders materials for research studies as needed.

Data & Laboratory Safety

  • Compiles, writes, and evaluates data for publication purposes and submits weekly project results to PI in the appropriate digital format.
  • Maintains accurate, detailed, and well-organized experimental records, data, and protocols.
  • Prepares graphs and tables via photography, computer, or manually, and communicates results to the principal investigator.
  • Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents for patent applications and publications.
  • Assists PI to ensure correct practice of laboratory safety and universal precautions standards as required under institutional guidelines, including but not limited to: maintenance of institutional regulatory records (safety manuals, MSDS, etc.) and performance of required laboratory testing (radiation wipe tests, etc.).
  • Keeps updated on training classes required by the institution and passes annual examinations. Maintains knowledge of all safety requirements.
  • Coordinates and shares responsibilities of laboratory maintenance and operation issues with co-workers.

Other duties as assigned.

Education: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.

Experience: With PhD, no experience required.  With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.

Preferred Experience:
Five years of related experience to include research work at MDACC.
