Safety Technician - Hazardous Materials / Waste
SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Safety Technician position is to provide to perform daily pick-up, transportation, segregation and processing of hazardous and radioactive materials. Performs monitoring surveys where radioactive materials are used or stored. Maintains all storage areas, equipment and personal protective equipment related to the safety programs. Responds to applicable emergency situations involving hazardous materials or fire and smoke incidents. Inspects and maintains fire protection equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, hood extinguishing systems and fire and smoke detection devices either internally or through services of outside contractors. Assists in conducting fire drills by providing instructions through the public address system. Adheres to institutional, state and federal regulations and guidelines when handling hazardous material or when exposed to hazardous situations. Prepares paperwork for maintaining state and federal agency. Must adhere to requirements of department and Emergency preparedness plans.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Operations - Carries out and conduct waste management, environmental protection operations and regulatory compliance activities associated with institutional waste and recycling programs.
Compliance - Carries out and conduct waste management, environmental protection operations and regulatory compliance activities associated with institutional waste and recycling programs. -Manages waste management or pollution prevention programs, including but not limited to medical waste, silver recovery, supply management, vehicle maintenance, universal waste, and recycling.
Emergency Response - Conducts emergency preparedness and response activities to internal incidents such as hazardous chemical spills during normal and off-shift hours.
High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in environmental, health and/or safety programs. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
