The Strategic Communications department at MD Anderson leads the institution’s integrated storytelling, digital strategy and brand communications. The team partners across the cancer center to deliver clear, engaging and accessible content that supports MD Anderson’s mission to end cancer. Through collaboration and data-informed decision-making, Strategic Communications ensures that patients, caregivers, employees, donors and the public receive timely, trustworthy and mission-aligned information.

The Senior Communications Specialist, Social Media supports MD Anderson’s social media strategy and program by developing patient-, survivor-, and caregiver-facing social media and digital content. This role includes posting to and monitoring organizational social media accounts — such as Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, YouTube, Yelp, Google Reviews, and others — managing social listening, and serving as a social media community manager to build and strengthen online relationships.


This position would be expected to attend occasional Institutional events. Additionally, this position will have expectations of monitoring social media and may require being on call on various nights and weekends throughout the month.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing social media or communications/PR for a brand or organization, with a background in news or media strongly preferred. They will bring demonstrated expertise in community management, proficiency with social media management platforms, and proven ability in crisis management or crisis communication.

Social Media Program & Project Coordination
Under the direction of the Program Director, Integrated Media – Social Media, the specialist:

  • Drafts and develops content for MD Anderson’s social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Yelp, Google Reviews, and new or emerging platforms, as well as the external Cancerwise blog.
  • Manages day-to-day posting, monitoring, and response across organizational social media accounts.
  • Tracks social media trends and platform changes.
  • Conducts social listening, including monitoring social issues and trending topics, and provides regular, timely updates to relevant leadership and stakeholders.
  • Supports MD Anderson’s social and digital presence at oncology conferences and institutional events (including some travel).
  • Collaborates with colleagues to ensure strategic alignment and consistent brand messaging.
  • Routinely monitors and responds to customers on organizational social media platforms.
  • Addresses online customer service reviews or complaints through coordinated response and collaboration with Patient Advocacy, Patient Access, Risk Management, Legal Services, Human Resources and other associated departments.

Online Community Management

  • Identifies, develops, and maintains relationships with key external and internal stakeholders, including current and prospective patients, caregivers, donors, bloggers, advocacy groups, employees, and thought leaders active in social media.
  • Reviews and vets potential content participants.
  • Translates relationships into social media content, deliverables, and communication tactics.
  • Attends face-to-face meetings with constituents and client leadership, participates in key customer meetings, and is available for consultation as needed.

Writing & Editing

  • Writes and develops content for a variety of audiences, including patients, caregivers, prospective employees, healthcare professionals, students, trainees, donors, supporters, and the general public.
  • Produces social media posts, social videos, Stories, infographics, graphics, podcast episodes, animation scripts, blog posts, and other materials.
  • Translates complex clinical, medical, or scientific information into clear, compelling, and accessible content.
  • Ensures clear and consistent writing and editing across all work products.
  • Demonstrates command of Associated Press style and MD Anderson style.
  • Proactively identifies and pursues new story ideas.
  • Optimizes content for search engines.

Measurement & Reporting

  • Tracks and analyzes the success of communications.
  • Provides status reports, identifies potential issues, and implements solutions.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's Degree English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

Preferred: Master's Degree English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: Four years Experience in public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field or two years required experience with preferred degree.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
