Senior Safety Technician
• Lead a team of Safety Technicians on short-term projects
• Coordinate with outside vendors for hazardous waste pickups and safety and ventilation system testing
• Maintain all storage areas, safety equipment, and personal protective equipment related to safety programs
• Perform daily pick-up, transportation, segregation, and processing of hazardous and radioactive materials
• Carry out waste management, contractor oversight, environmental protection operations, and regulatory compliance activities associated with institutional waste and recycling programs
• Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials or fire and smoke incidents
• Conduct emergency preparedness and response activities for internal incidents such as hazardous chemical spills during normal and off-shift hours
• Adhere to departmental and emergency preparedness plans for all Houston Area Locations
• Perform monitoring surveys where radioactive materials are used or stored
• Inspect and maintain fire protection equipment
• Recognize and evaluate safety hazards through inspections and audits
• Conduct industrial hygiene sampling and fit testing
• Provide excellent customer service by assisting safety specialists with emergency exercises, fire drills, safety seals, and training activities
• Prepare paperwork and documentation required for state and federal agencies
• Adhere to institutional, state, and federal regulations and guidelines when handling hazardous materials or working in hazardous situations
• Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Preferred: Associate’s Degree in a science-related field, fire protection, or a safety-related field
• Required: Three years of experience in environmental, health, and/or safety programs. Years of experience may be substituted for each completed year of college on a one-to-one basis
• Preferred: Demonstrated EHS experience and working knowledge in hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene practices, and laboratory safety protocols. Relevant certifications such as HAZWOPER, RCRA, and DOT hazardous materials transportation training.
• Required: Texas Driver’s License Class A, B, or C as applicable, a valid Texas driver’s license based on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried, and eligibility to drive state and institutional vehicles upon hire
• Preferred: Hazardous Materials Handling Certification HM-181, HM-215-A, and HM-126-F from the Department of Transportation, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response General Site Worker certification from OSHA, Mold Assessment Consultant or Mold Assessment Technician certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Licensed Registered Accessibility Specialist certification from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Fire Inspector I, or Certified Fire Plan Examiner certification from the National Fire Protection Association, National Registry of Radiation Protection Technician certification, Certified Safety and Health Official certification from the OSHA Training Institute, Certified Accessibility Inspector or Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council, Occupational Health and Safety Technologist certification, Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner certification, and Class D Water Operators License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality upon hire
• Required: Ability to work independently across multiple sites, strong judgment and situational awareness, excellent documentation and communication skills, flexibility and organization as job duties shift frequently, ability to respond to emergencies, and willingness to participate in an on-call rotation
• Preferred: Environmental health and safety experience or knowledge in hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and laboratory safety, HAZWOPER, RCRA, and DOT certifications, and the ability to learn quickly
