The Senior Safety Technician supports the Environmental Health and Safety – Houston Area Locations team by leading Safety Technicians on short-term projects and delivering hands-on environmental health and safety services across multiple facilities. The Senior Safety Technician coordinates hazardous waste operations, emergency response, inspections, and regulatory compliance activities to support safe and compliant operations throughout the Houston region.
 
The Senior Safety Technician role is part of MD Anderson Cancer Center, a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Senior Safety Technician plays a critical role in protecting people, facilities, and the environment by supporting institutional safety programs, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance at Houston Area Locations and Regional Diagnostic Imaging sites.
 
The ideal candidate for the Senior Safety Technician role is reliable, safety-focused, and able to work independently across multiple sites, with some field experience in environmental health and safety programs. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong judgment, situational awareness, and excellent documentation and communication skills, with preferred experience in hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene, and laboratory safety, along with relevant safety and regulatory certifications.
 
Salary: Minimum $47,000 – Midpoint $58,500 – Maximum $70,000. 
The work schedule is open to flexible options including 9-80, 4-10, or 8-hour shifts; if a flexible schedule is selected, the off day cannot be Monday. This is a 100% onsite position, starting each day at 1MC with travel to Houston Area Locations and Regional Diagnostic Imaging sites as needed. The employee may be expected to participate in an on-call rotation and will be compensated accordingly when assigned.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Safety Operations & Team Leadership
• Lead a team of Safety Technicians on short-term projects
• Coordinate with outside vendors for hazardous waste pickups and safety and ventilation system testing
• Maintain all storage areas, safety equipment, and personal protective equipment related to safety programs
 
Hazardous Materials & Waste Management
• Perform daily pick-up, transportation, segregation, and processing of hazardous and radioactive materials
• Carry out waste management, contractor oversight, environmental protection operations, and regulatory compliance activities associated with institutional waste and recycling programs
 
Emergency Response & Preparedness
• Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials or fire and smoke incidents
• Conduct emergency preparedness and response activities for internal incidents such as hazardous chemical spills during normal and off-shift hours
• Adhere to departmental and emergency preparedness plans for all Houston Area Locations
 
Inspections, Monitoring & Testing
• Perform monitoring surveys where radioactive materials are used or stored
• Inspect and maintain fire protection equipment
• Recognize and evaluate safety hazards through inspections and audits
• Conduct industrial hygiene sampling and fit testing
 
Customer Service & Program Support
• Provide excellent customer service by assisting safety specialists with emergency exercises, fire drills, safety seals, and training activities
• Prepare paperwork and documentation required for state and federal agencies
• Adhere to institutional, state, and federal regulations and guidelines when handling hazardous materials or working in hazardous situations
 

EDUCATION
• Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
• Preferred: Associate’s Degree in a science-related field, fire protection, or a safety-related field
 
WORK EXPERIENCE
• Required: Three years of experience in environmental, health, and/or safety programs. Years of experience may be substituted for each completed year of college on a one-to-one basis
• Preferred: Demonstrated EHS experience and working knowledge in hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene practices, and laboratory safety protocols. Relevant certifications such as HAZWOPER, RCRA, and DOT hazardous materials transportation training.
 
 
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
• Required: Texas Driver’s License Class A, B, or C as applicable, a valid Texas driver’s license based on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried, and eligibility to drive state and institutional vehicles upon hire
• Preferred: Hazardous Materials Handling Certification HM-181, HM-215-A, and HM-126-F from the Department of Transportation, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response General Site Worker certification from OSHA, Mold Assessment Consultant or Mold Assessment Technician certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services, Licensed Registered Accessibility Specialist certification from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Fire Inspector I, or Certified Fire Plan Examiner certification from the National Fire Protection Association, National Registry of Radiation Protection Technician certification, Certified Safety and Health Official certification from the OSHA Training Institute, Certified Accessibility Inspector or Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council, Occupational Health and Safety Technologist certification, Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner certification, and Class D Water Operators License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality upon hire
 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• Required: Ability to work independently across multiple sites, strong judgment and situational awareness, excellent documentation and communication skills, flexibility and organization as job duties shift frequently, ability to respond to emergencies, and willingness to participate in an on-call rotation
• Preferred: Environmental health and safety experience or knowledge in hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, and laboratory safety, HAZWOPER, RCRA, and DOT certifications, and the ability to learn quickly
