The Veterinary Medicine and Surgery department exists to serve MD Anderson research programs. Our primary mission is to provide the best possible veterinary care, facilities and services in support of the institutional animal care and use program, in keeping with all applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) accreditation standards.

Veterinary Medicine & Surgery

Staff Supervision & Work Direction:  

  • Supervise, train, monitor and evaluate assigned personnel.
  • Make recommendations to the
    Animal Resources Manager and Associate Director, Animal Resources, for hire, merit increases, and promotions.
  • Work with HR Business Partner and Director, Animal Facility Business Operations to initiate disciplinary actions, coaching sessions or performance improvement plans, separations as needed.
  • Works with HR and Director, Animal Facility Business Operations on FML and accommodation requests.
  • Monitors facility users to ensure that they follow departmental policies and procedures.
  •  Reviews animal protocols, purchase, and submits maintenance requests.
  • Participates in compliance such as IACUC inspections, USDA inspections, and AAALAC site visits.
  • Serves on rotation for on-call supervisor.
  • Serves as backup for weekend/holiday supervisor as needed.
  • Serves on rotation to lead the facility tours/training for research personnel.
  • Plans work schedules and distributes workload.
  • Schedules cage, rack, room cleaning and other personnel duties using electronic task management system.
  • Performs health and facility observations routinely and ensures husbandry checklists are completed monthly.
  • Participates in making recommendations on housing space assignments.
  • Approves or denies time off requests.
  • Approves timesheets weekly for assigned staff. 
  • Performs job duties of all subordinates when there is a lack of available personnel.
  • Performs or supervises specialized decontamination procedures of equipment and supplies into or out of the facility.
  • Supervises in the transport of animals and may be required to drive departmental vehicles.

Documentation: 

  • Monitors electronic facility management systems, records data in the appropriate hardcopy or electronic system.
  • Ensures that data is entered in a timely manner. 
  • Records the completion of assigned tasks using the electronic task management system.
  • Prepares, assembles, compiles, and maintains animal and equipment inventory for reporting, accounting, and billing purposes.
  • Ensures Quality Assurance procedures such as ATPase, and timesheets are approved weekly for assigned personnel. 
  • Enters billing information into departmental database.
  • Helps maintain documentation regarding facility trainings and badge access.
  • Assigns PIN access as needed.

Facility & Room Care: 

  • Monitors overall facility conditions and reports problems to Animal Resources Manager or Associate Director, Animal Resources.
  • Ensures facility and equipment sanitization occurs according to established schedules.
  • Reports any general health problems and/or animal deaths, major changes in normal room conditions, or facility malfunctions to Animal Resources Manager or Associate Director, Animal Resources.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required: Bachelor's degree in a Biological Science. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis with one year of supervisory/team lead experience in animal care. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Preferred experience - Experience working in the lab animal science field

CERTIFICATION

Required: Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science within 180 days of eligibility. Any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2012 must possess required certification.

Required: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
