The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

The primary purpose of the Technical Writer is to provide technical writing and editing of grants and manuscripts under the supervision of the Assistant Professor. 

Know your business 

•Gather information from subject matter experts to assist in writing

manuscripts, grant applications, internal documents and other documents.

•Compose and manage multiple projects concurrently and, through excellent

communication skills, deliver high-quality technical content for both internal and external publication.

•Assist in preparing multidisciplinary and multi-collaborator grant and contract proposals for submission to a wide range of funding agencies, organizations, industries and foundations.

•Provides proofreading, copyediting, line editing and minor reorganization of

manuscripts and other documents written by faculty and staff. Coordinates and prepares manuscripts for journal, internal documents, presentations and other submission according to guidelines established by the organizations accepting the submission.

•Provides assistance to Assistant Professor and staff on generating figures, illustrations, and tabular material needed for publications and presentations.

•Assists in writing and graphic art tasks as needed.

•Generate letters of intent, research proposals and supporting documents, such as progress reports, for grants and other non-profit and for-profit organization awards.

•Utilize institutional and departmental databases to perform data retrieval for analysis.

•Submit well-researched and well-written proposals within tight time constraints.

•Maintain copies of grants and contract proposals, and comply with reporting grant deliverables and deadlines.

Know your business of your department/Institute 

•Understand the laboratory’s research activities and goals to create effective cover letters, project narrative and supporting information for collaboration with intra- and extramural entities.

•Interact with scientists and laboratory researchers to gather and relay information.

•Ensure that information collected is accurate, reflects the requested information, and is provided in accordance with specified guidelines.

Change Agent


•Provide reports to faculty, grant program manager and department

administrator regarding grant status as needed.

•Represent department in a professional and appropriate manner within the institution as well as externally.


Required: Bachelor's degree in English or related field. 


Required: Two years experience as a writer/editor. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
