Vice President, Ambulatory Operations
The mission of UT MD Anderson is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research, and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees, and the public.
The Vice President (VP), Ambulatory Operations serves as the administrative, strategic and financial leader for all ambulatory operations at MD Anderson including main campus, and all other locations including the Houston Areas Locations (HALs). The Vice President, Ambulatory Operations will work as the administrative dyad partner with the Vice President, Ambulatory Medical Practice and will oversee the Executive Directors for Ambulatory Business Services and Ambulatory Clinics supporting and championing clinical operational and administrative activities related to patient care at Texas Medical Center and Houston Area Locations. The VP, Ambulatory Operations will collaborate with academic division, department, clinical operational leaders and other key stakeholders across the institution to encourage a comprehensive approach to problem solving that links together all areas.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Administrative and Operational Partnerships:
• Serves as the Administrative, Operational, Strategic and Financial leader of the entire ambulatory enterprise at MD Anderson including the main Houston campus and all remote locations including the Houston Area Locations (HALs).
• Serves as dyad partner to the Vice President, Ambulatory Medical Practice in supporting the clinical operations and initiatives across the HALs and TMC Centers. Understands the services provided by each of the business units and their interdependencies to other units.
• Collaborates with other institutional leaders especially service line leadership, access and navigation leaders and center medical directors/practice plan leadership to enable an enterprise-wide scheduling approach, capacity management, and prioritization of services for expansion.
• Collaborates with clinical infrastructure, facilities and clinical departments to support expansion into new ambulatory buildings.
• Leads an Institutional Clinical Priority Focus Area/Governing Body project pertaining to ambulatory operations.
• Lead the development of long-range volume, revenue and expense projections and financial plans, conducts appropriate analyses, and recommends and implements adjustments when necessary.
• Leads Ambulatory CCLT and other key ambulatory communication venues.
• Participates in on-site Leadership Rounding.
• Understands how to leverage the Epic platform and other technology solutions to maximize staff productivity, patient and provider experience. Gain familiarity with Epic Cadence, Ambulatory, MyChart, and Grand Prelude modules.
• Serves in the rotation of within Incident Command structure.
Human Resources:
• Coach, develop, and oversee the Executive Directors for ambulatory operations.
• Provide recommendations on organizational structure to Chief Clinical Operations Officer.
• Develop staffing ratios for ambulatory clinics and develop strategies to ensure appropriate staffing levels for all ambulatory clinical areas.
Quality and Safety
• Serves as a role model for quality clinical care and professionalism by adhering to policies and procedures and supporting a Just Culture environment.
• Participates in Institutional Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement(QAPI) and Tiered Readiness Briefings.
• Participates in Root Cause Analysis for ambulatory safety events Communication.
• Communicates clearly and regularly with direct reports and key stakeholders to work toward a common mission and vision.
• Promotes communication and adequate flow of information to all institutional stakeholders.
• Interacts regularly with faculty, CMDs and senior leadership to ensure communication regarding changes in processes and policies.
• Serves as a liaison between providers, staff and other members of the ambulatory operations team to ensure that all stakeholders are fairly represented in decision making.
• Understands the MD Anderson structure, culture, and services and has excellent relationships and influence skills with physician and administrative peers.

• Helps and supports initiatives for improved provider, staff, and patient experience.

• Engages in the design of ambulatory strategic goals and initiatives that align with the institutional mission and strategic plan.
• Collaborates with key stakeholders to develop and create new strategies for utilizing capacity across the enterprise appropriately and using data driven approach to identify and prioritize opportunities for expansion.

EDUCATION
Required: Master’s degree in Business Administration or related field.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
• Minimum 15 years of progressive leadership experience, including 10 years of management responsibility within a healthcare organization of comparable size, complexity, and scope to UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
• Demonstrated success developing and executing enterprise-wide ambulatory operations strategies in a large, matrixed health system.
• Proven track record of building, mentoring, and advancing high-performing leadership teams.
• Demonstrated capability of achieving/delivery institutional and divisional outcomes
• Demonstrated ability to cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships with physician leaders and clinical stakeholders at a senior level.
Preferred:
• 15+ years of leadership experience specifically within ambulatory operations at a large academic medical center or comprehensive cancer center of similar scale to UT MD Anderson.
• Established record of leading organizational transformation and driving operational strategy across multiple sites or service lines.
• Experience operating within a large academic health system with complex governance structures, including faculty and departmental relationships.
