Associate's degree in Health Information Management. Two years of coding experience in a medical services environment or one year as a Clinical Coding Associate at M D Anderson Cancer Center . May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis and no experience required with preferred degree.

Licensure/Certification:
Reqired: One or more of the following from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professioanl Coders (AAPC)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by AHIMA
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by AHIMA
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by AHIMA
  • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) by AHIMA
  • Certified Coding Specialist-Associate (CCA) by AHIMA
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by AAPC
  • Certified Professional Coder - Hosptial (CPC-H) by AAPC
  • Certified Professional Coder - Associate (CPC-A) by AAPC

Preferred: One or more of the following coding certifications:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by AHIMA
  • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P) by AHIMA
  • Certified Coding Specialist-Associate (CCA) by AHIMA
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by AAPC
  • Certified Professional Coder - Hosptial (CPC-H) by AAPC
  • Certified Professional Coder - Associate (CPC-A) by AAPC
