The ideal candidate will have experience in genomic data bioinformatics pipelines and precision oncology.

In collaboration with the MDACC molecular diagnostics laboratory (MDL) leadership, provide a framework and ongoing operational and strategic leadership of bioinformatics for the MDL.

Support functional development of the OncoSeek genomics annotation and reporting engine which has been used to generate all >30,000 genomic next-generation sequencing panel reports at MD Anderson since 2012.

Oversee and manage barcoded automation efforts for MDL.  Specific efforts include but are not limited to, management of the computerized positive patient identification system initiatives leading to full integration with hospital and laboratory informatics system.  Manage the development of automated rack label and vial label printing with real-time Micronics tube mapping for stock tube management for all derivative sample types (e.g. DNA, RNA, cDNA).  Supervise the informatics team to coordinate interfacing with existing robotic sample storage (ASR), quantitation devices (Synergy), and robotic fluid handlers for plate setups & core laboratory workflows.

Assists MDL leadership around compliance with internal and external requirements. (DLMP QSEs and regulatory compliance CLIA and CAP).
 
Support of Informatic Applications and Computational Tools   
Oversees the analysis and the development of algorithms and software tools for complex laboratory applications for the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.

Assists with management of the computational implementation of clinical next-generation sequencing and microarray genomic technologies.

Support the institutional use and re-use of clinical genomic laboratory data through the development and maintenance of the genomics components of the shared pathology data repository (SPiDR) and other institutional data warehousing efforts.

Oversees the development and training of procedures, policies and tools to enhance knowledge on Laboratory information systems.
• Oversees the compilation of analyses and generation of data reports for various projects including, but not limited to manual and computer-aided data entering and prepared data for publication and distribution. 
•Oversees the development, maintenance and utilization of database management systems for the Molecular laboratory section.
• Assists in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of the bioinformatics function and overall research computing capability
• Oversee the computational infrastructure and controls the flow of samples and information for large-scale studies 
• Develop and maintain applications systems for the management and analysis of data
• Develop novel informatics tools and utilizes emerging web technologies
• Provide web-based bioinformatics and access to public and proprietary relational databases
• Develop and apply computational tools
• Oversee a staff of information systems professionals
• Assist in process where events are reported, documented, investigated, tracked, and analyzed to facilitate system and/or process changes to improve patient safety. 
• Participate in continuous improvement activities
• Delivers high performing, reliable, consistent and cost-effective bioinformatics services while optimizing delivery times.

QUALITY CONTROL AND RESULTS REVIEW  
•Must be able to comprehend relevance of printed results and correlate patient data with research and clinical findings.

•Must be able to ensure that quality control/quality assurance standards are implemented and knowledgeable of laboratory regulatory requirements. •Must be able to relate quality control result data to specimen analysis data assuring that appropriate action is taken based on results obtained.
•Must have basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, email, internet, and databases.  Knowledgeable of advanced software tools to support sequencing data analysis review.

Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or related field. Eight years of experience in scientific software or industry programming with a concentration in scientific computing, to include a minimum of two years supervisory/ management experience. With Master's degree, six year's experience required, to include a minimum of two years supervisory/ management experience. With PhD, four years of experience required, to include a minimum of two years supervisory/ management experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
