The Infection Control department at MD Anderson Cancer Center is central to ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff by leading hospital-wide infection prevention and control initiatives. The department partners closely with clinical teams, hospital leadership, Occupational Health, and regulatory agencies to implement best practices that reduce hospital-acquired infections and ensure ongoing compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.

As the Infection Control Manager, you will oversee the daily operations of the infection control program while supporting the Medical Director of Infection Control and the High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization Director in fostering a culture of performance improvement. You will play a key leadership role in coordinating the systematic implementation of evidence-based best practices designed to improve patient outcomes and minimize infection-related risk across the institution.

In this role, you will lead hospital-wide infection prevention efforts including surveillance, prevention strategies, policy development, compliance monitoring, and regulatory readiness. You will be responsible for developing the annual infection control program, risk assessment, and performance improvement plan, while driving initiatives aimed at decreasing or eliminating hospital-acquired infections. You will also be accountable for ensuring that departmental activities meet the expectations of accrediting and regulatory agencies.

You will collaborate closely with hospital administration, medical staff, committees, and multidisciplinary departments to carry out all functions of the infection prevention and control program. When patient safety concerns arise or risks are unclear, you will work with both clinical and non-clinical teams to ensure timely resolution and risk mitigation.

This position serves as a key liaison between Infection Control, Occupational Health, institutional leadership, and external regulatory and public health agencies at the city, county, and state levels. You will help set priorities and goals in consultation with senior leadership, recommend system and practice improvements, and assist with budget oversight in partnership with the Department Administrator.

**The ideal will be CIC certified and have at least 2 years of experience in a formal Infection Control management/director title in Acute Care.**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES 

Coordinates the systematic implementation of best practices Assists the Medical Director of Infection Control and the High Level Disinfection and Sterilization Director in fostering a culture of performance improvement and coordinating the systematic implementation of best practices designed to improve patient outcomes. Plans, directs, and manages the activities of the department; works closely with designated medical staff and hospital administration, hospital departments, and committees to carry out all functions incorporated into the infection preventions and control program. Involved in system-wide performance improvement activities; is accountable for fulfilling requirements from accrediting and regulatory agencies. In cases where patient safety is potentially comprised or risk is unknown, the Director, Infection Control is expected to work with clinical and non-clinical teams to ensure safety and timely resolutions. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. 

Leader in hospital-wide infection prevention and control programs, as well as serves as liaison Leads the hospital-wide infection prevention and control program including surveillance, prevention, best-practices, policies, compliance, and regulatory requirements. Develops the annual infection control program, risk assessment, and PI Plan and leads programs to decrease or eliminate hospital-acquired infections. Oversees daily operations and assists the Department Administrator with budget issues related to section of Infection Control. Sets priorities and goals in consultation with senior management. Recommends changes in systems and practices. Provides direction and guidance to staff as necessary. Collaborates with Occupational Health department and serves as the hospital liaison to the institution leadership, regulatory agencies, and city, county and state health departments. Directs, delegates, and oversees work efforts as appropriate to insure the best possible delivery of service and high customer satisfaction. Promote a satisfied and competent employee work environment through establishing a climate for growth and challenge, doing timely performance appraisals, providing development and mentoring of staff.

Monitors the execution of preventive measures for the provision of skills and knowledge regarding infection preventative measures and control practices to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Education

Required:
• Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare related field

Preferred:
• Master’s Degree in Public Health, Biostatistics, Nursing, or Epidemiology

Work Experience

Required:
• Seven years of patient care experience or healthcare agency to include three years in a supervisory/management level position in infection prevention and control

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Required (upon hire):
• CIC – Certified in Infection Control: Certification Board of Infection Control

Preferred (upon hire):
• RN – Registered Nurse: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN) OR
• MT – Medical Technologist: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• M(ASCP) – Technologist in Microbiology: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• CLS – Clinical Laboratory Scientist: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR)

Other Requirements

• Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
