Within Diagnostic Laboratory Services, the Phlebotomist supports high-quality diagnostic care by performing accurate specimen collection and ensuring integrity throughout the testing process. The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in patient interactions, safety compliance, and laboratory workflow efficiency. Success in the Phlebotomist role requires strong procedural expertise, attention to detail, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, making the Phlebotomist vital to daily clinical operations.

The ideal candidate has outpatient and inpatient phlebotomy experience, certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Monday - Thursday, 12:00 AM - 5:00 AM (Part-Time / 20 hours)


Minimum $20.67 – Midpoint $25.96 – Maximum $31.25

Responsibilities

Phlebotomy Procedures

  • Perform venipuncture using established clinical techniques
  • Conduct central venous catheter blood collection procedures
  • Execute arterial punctures as required
  • Collect blood cultures using bottles and isolator tubes
  • Perform bleeding time procedures
  • Apply isolation room procedures during specimen collection
  • Demonstrate age-specific skills for broad patient populations

Performance & Productivity

  • Complete assignments independently without undue reliance on others
  • Achieve productivity standards of the section
  • Assist with problem solving for workflow or clinical issues
  • Participate in continuing educational programs
  • Support training of new hires and students

Policy & Procedure Compliance

  • Follow all phlebotomy procedures in accordance with the section's procedure manual
  • Accurately identify patients and collect correct specimens
  • Maintain specimen integrity through proper collection and timely transport
  • Complete electronic and paper records accurately
  • Assist co-workers as required to support operations
     

Safety & Environment

  •  Maintain a safe environment for patients, co-workers, and visitors
  • Utilize equipment and supplies in a manner that ensures safety
  • Wear protective attire and personal protective equipment as required
  • Participate in all required safety training
     

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree From a Medical Laboratory Technician Program or completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program

WORK EXPERIENCE 

  • Required: Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory or with preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required
  • Preferred: Outpatient and Inpatient Phlebotomist experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Required: None
  • Preferred: CPT - Cert Phlebotomy Technician Phlebotomy certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) or American Certification Agency (ACA) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
