SUMMARY
This position is for an Instructor, Research Faculty Appointment (RFA) in the Department of Imaging Physics. This position will involve conducting research and the candidate is expected to carry out on-going projects under the direction of a supervising senior faculty and to develop independent research project(s) in radio-sensitization cancer therapy and in situ therapeutics, with a specific focus on gold biomineralization, immunomodulation and modulation of tumor microenvironment for cancer treatment. This position requires close collaboration with physicists, radiologists, medical and radiation oncologists, and other research staff and trainees. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. The person filling the position will be expected to maintain a consistent peer-reviewed publication record and to submit research proposals as a PI for independent funding. Further, the instructor will be expected to participate in the in training of other pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the lab.

SPECIAL SKILLS
1. Desired skills are experiences in bioanalytical assays, cell culture techniques, murine animal models of pancreatic and/or other cancers, and good scientific methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Research activities 90%
The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to:
1. Work either under the direction of a supervising faculty member or independently on the existing funded research projects in radio-sensitization of pancreatic and thyroid cancers using in situ gold biomineralization, including studies of the biomineralization mechanisms, interactions with the immune system, and transitioning from the preclinical studies to clinical trials. Will be expected to maintain a consistent peer-reviewed publication record and to submit research proposals as a PI for independent funding. Will also be expected to participate in the training of other pre-doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in the lab.
2. Lead, participate and/or assist in preparing peer-reviewed journal manuscripts, scientific conference abstracts, and progress reports on the research findings.
3. Lead, participate and/or assist in preparing grant proposals on new hypothesis-driven research in the areas of cancer radio-sensitization, in situ therapeutics, and nanomedicine.
4. Participate in departmental seminars and other research related activities.
5. Help supervise and educate trainees in their research efforts.

Educational activities 5%
1. Participates in the training of medical physics graduate students and post-doctoral research fellows.
Administrative activities 5%
1. Participates in CME and in-service sessions for faculty and staff.
2. Participates in institutional, administrative and faculty committee meetings and activities.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. The position requires the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of employees and staff, the ability to think and perform independent research, to review and analyze highly complex data.

SUPERVISION
Received: Supervision and evaluation will be given by a senior faculty who works in cancer nanotechnology and molecular imaging with optical contrast in the Department of Imaging Physics.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Research and educational duties all require the ability to communicate effectively, remain calm in a sometimes stressful environment, and provide sound decisions in a timely fashion. This position may also involve some exposure to radiation and high voltage environments and exposure to infectious disease is possible. The position requires the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of patients, staff and faculty, the ability to think and perform independent research, and the ability review, analyze and interpret highly complex data.

Work Location:  Onsite

This position has a target base salary of $65,000 to $100,000 and is eligible for incentive compensation, comprehensive health, wellness, time off, savings, and retirement benefits, as well as relocation support, as applicable.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in bioengineering or a related field and a minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience in the related field.
