The MD Anderson Cancer Center Transfusion Medicine Section is a combination of two sections, Transfusion Service and Donor Operations.  MDA transfuses over 190,000 blood components (red blood cells, platelets, plasma, granulocytes, MNCs, etc.) per year, and is considered the largest single hospital-based Transfusion Service in the U.S. serving the needs of cancer patients. In addition to blood and blood components, the Transfusion Service acquires, stores and distributes all tissue used for clinical purposes, except for bone marrow, cord blood and stem cells.


Lab Purchasing, Inventory, and Contract Maintenance

- Performs inventory of blood products, tissue, supplies/reagents according to departmental procedures.

- Handles the inventory needs and procurement process from its initial stages at the requisition level until delivery is complete and receipts are verified.  The purchasing is inclusive of tissue orders, service contracts and blood products, special orders with EAJs, lab supplies, and emergency PO’s.

- Maintenance of the tissue requisition file and spreadsheet to be housed in the Transfusion Service L: Drive  which includes access to all general information including requisition and PO details for tissue orders, contracts, current pricing, and agreements for all Tissue and Orthopedic vendors approved by the VAT and utilized by Transfusion Services in order to improve tissue ordering processes.

- Works with sourcing on contracts to submit all Contact Intact forms for Reagent Contracts and Tissue Contracts.

Patient Results Entry

- Accurately enters patient data into various Laboratory Informatics Systems (Cerner, PowerPath, MDL Portal).
- Makes reports ready for pathology sign-out.
- Scans completed results into patient folders.

Tissue and Blood Product Invoice Exception Handling

- Resolves purchasing, invoicing, billing, and products issues that would delay patient care.  In addition, operates as the contact for quotes, contracts, receipts, and packing slips.

- Complies with the section telephone courtesy policies and procedures

- Demonstrate cooperation when working with both internal and external customers.
- Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances.

- Remains willing and capable of assisting in crisis situations.




- Operates instrumentation/equipment according to specific protocols
- Is able to perform and document standard service, quality control, and/or calibration procedures.
- Is able to troubleshoot and resolve common instrumentation/equipment problems

High school diploma or equivalent. Three years of experience in a clinical medical laboratory or similar setting. With preferred degree, no experience requried.
