Reporting to the Director of Creative Communications, the Program Director plans, develops and oversees MD Anderson’s visual communication materials for a wide range of audiences, purposes and projects. The role focuses heavily on design support for institutes, programs and research initiatives. This position requires strong expertise in MD Anderson’s visual brand and includes oversight and/or production of publications, reports, research and scientific imagery, medical illustration and animation. The Program Director also provides digital creative direction and oversees work from direct reports, collaborators and external vendors.


The ideal candidate will hold an Associate’s degree or higher, bring at least seven years of graphic design experience, preferably within the healthcare sector, and have experience supporting large brands or organizations.  Candidates residing within the state of Texas may be preferred. 
Onsite travel may be required as needed for meetings and business needs.

Under the direction of the Director of Creative Communications, this role leads the development of visual design solutions that maintain MD Anderson’s brand and visual identity. The Program Director works closely across the organization, supporting a broad range of projects with a particular emphasis on institutes, programs and research initiatives.

Creative / Visual Design

  • Plans and develops visual design solutions for a wide variety of organizational initiatives, communications and audiences.
  • Produces publications, reports, brochures, event materials, posters, infographics, multimedia presentations and web/social media projects.
  • Ensures all work adheres strictly to organizational brand standards.
  • Works with professional printers to manage pre press and production processes; attends press checks as needed.
  • Coordinates photo shoots.
  • Presents design work to customers, including senior leaders, for review and feedback.
  • Tracks the success of work products, projects and initiatives, identifying opportunities for improvement and addressing potential issues proactively.

Design Project Direction

  • Provides art direction and oversight for visual design projects, Institutional Affairs initiatives, animations, and scientific/medical imagery.

Strategic Counsel

  • Serves as a knowledgeable brand steward, ensuring all projects align with MD Anderson’s brand look, feel and related policies.
  • Provides education, information and support to internal and external customers regarding design inquiries and service requests.
  • Attends key customer meetings and is available for consultation as needed.
  • Offers visual design direction to colleagues and collaborators.

People Management

  • Directs the work of (senior) communication designers, external service providers, vendors and contracted personnel.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's Degree Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field.

Preferred: Master's Degree Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required: Five years Project/program management experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred degree may substitute for two years of required experience.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
