Safety Specialist
The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team at MD Anderson Cancer Center designs and evaluates health and safety programs that will maintain and enhance health, improve safety and increase productivity. The OHS team is multidisciplinary, including ergonomists, certified industrial hygienists, certified safety specialists, mold consultants and asbestos project managers. We provide regulatory interpretations, technical assistance and recommendations to occupational health and safety programs. The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist is to support MD Anderson Cancer Center’s mission by implementing and evaluating health and safety programs that promote well-being, reduce risk, and enhance operational efficiency. This position provides technical expertise to address safety concerns affecting employees, patients, visitors, and contractors across the institution. The role involves conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, policy development, and regulatory compliance activities in alignment with institutional standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Ideal candidate will have Industrial Hygiene and environmental remediation/monitoring experience. Some specifics are air sampling, exposure monitoring, asbestos abatement, mold remediation, general safety knowledge. Mold consultant license a plus.
Shift: Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM with flexible start time.
Salary Range: Minimum $64,000.00 - Midpoint $110,000.00 - Max $156,000.00
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Hazard Identification and Mitigation
- Conduct accident investigations and ergonomic assessments.
- Evaluate fall protection, liquid nitrogen handling, mold/water damage, noise, lighting, and shop/dock hazards.
- Recommend corrective actions in accordance with OSHA and institutional standards.
Regulatory Compliance
- Perform OSHA fit testing and exposure monitoring.
- Ensure compliance with USP 797 pharmacy standards and mold regulations.
- Provide technical support for asbestos, lead, and mold remediation.
- Interpret and apply relevant regulations, including:
- OSHA
- EPA NESHAP
- Texas Department of State Health Services (TAHPR)
- Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
- OSHA
Program Development and Implementation
- Support and evaluate Occupational Health & Safety programs.
- Conduct industrial hygiene sampling, including air, water, and bioaerosol assessments.
- Manage respiratory protection and cryogenic liquid safety programs.
- Maintain and evaluate safety equipment and inventory.
- Assist with pharmacy compliance sampling and slip/trip/fall prevention initiatives.
Policy and Risk Management
- Review and develop environmental and safety policies.
- Conduct incident investigations and present findings to leadership.
- Draft institutional comments on proposed state and federal regulations
- Support emergency preparedness and Joint Commission compliance efforts.
Required: Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science, or related field.
Preferred: Advanced degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: None
Preferred: Industrial Hygiene, environmental remediation, or occupational safety.
Licensure and Certifications
Required: Valid Texas Driver’s License (Class A, B, or C)
Preferred:
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – Board of Certified Safety Professionals
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) – American Board of Industrial Hygiene
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) – National Environmental Health Association
- Mold Consultant License – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
