Senior Safety Technician
The Radiation Safety Team, under the supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer, manages all licenses and registrations that authorize the possession and use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment at MD Anderson

The Senior Safety Technician plays a vital leadership role within the Radiation Safety team, overseeing daily safety operations and short-term technical projects. This position leads a team of Safety Technicians and collaborates closely with external vendors to ensure compliance, efficiency, and safety across all radiation and hazardous material operations.
The ideal candidate will possess working knowledge of radioactive and hazardous materials with hands-on experience with safety operations involving hazardous substances
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. This position also includes participation in an on-call rotation during evenings and weekends as operational needs arise.
Salary range: 47,000.00 $ 58,500.00 $ 70,000.00
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and mentor a team of Safety Technicians on short-term and special projects.
- Coordinate with outside vendors for hazardous waste pickups, safety testing, and ventilation system inspections.
- Support departmental and institutional emergency preparedness initiatives.
Hazardous & Radioactive Material Management
- Perform daily pick-up, transportation, segregation, and processing of hazardous and radioactive materials.
- Conduct monitoring and contamination surveys in areas where radioactive materials are used or stored.
- Maintain storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure compliance and safety.
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure all practices comply with institutional, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare and maintain documentation required for regulatory agencies.
- Support proper posting of radiological areas and participate in annual reviews.
Program Support & Implementation
- Manage receipt inspections, documentation, and delivery of both sealed and unsealed radioactive sources.
- Participate in semi-annual inventories, leak tests, and interlock checks of sealed sources and irradiators.
- Support dosimetry operations by issuing, collecting, and managing dosimeters and related records.
Training & Development
- Coach, counsel, and mentor Safety Technicians to enhance team performance.
- Take a leadership role in the execution of special projects within the Radiation Safety Program.
Supports the use of radiation producing machines and laser for research and clinical uses by completing and documenting the semi-annual inventory of these devices.
Supports the operations of the dosimetry program by issuing temporary dosimeters, distributing and collecting dosimeters. Provides further support in the dosimetry program by adding and deleting participants in the applicable software systems as needed.
Coordinates the day to day operation of the Radiation Safety Office. Supports the development of Safety Technicians by providing coaching, counseling, and mentoring of Safety Technicians. Supports the Radiation Safety Program by taking the lead on special projects.
EDUCATION
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Preferred: Associate's Degree Science related field, fire protection or safety related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required: 3 years Experience in environmental, health and/or safety programs.
Preferred: Hazardous and radioactive materials experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required: Valid Texas Driver’s License (Class A, B, or C) – Required upon hire; must be eligible to operate State and institutional vehicles.
Preferred:
- Hazardous Materials Handling Certification (DOT HM-181, HM-215-A, HM-126-F) – Department of Transportation, upon hire.
- HAZWOPER General Site Worker Certification (29 CFR 1910.120) – OSHA, upon hire.
- National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians (NRRPT) – Upon hire or obtained within a reasonable timeframe.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) – Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), upon hire.
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) – Board for Global EHS Credentialing, upon hire.
