Ideal candidate will have Industrial Hygiene and environmental remediation/monitoring experience. Some specifics are air sampling, exposure monitoring, asbestos abatement, mold remediation, general safety knowledge. Mold consultant license, that would be a plus.

SUMMARY 

The primary purpose of the Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving personnel, visitors, patients and other institutional staff and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains awareness with applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes environmental and safety policy review and development risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate risk and solutions. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Joint Commission, Environmental Protection, Construction Safety and Biological, Chemical and Laboratory Safety.

Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazards

Recognizes, evaluates and provides corrective actions to identified safety hazards. a. Perform accident investigations b. Perform ergonomic assessments c. Fall protection assessments d. Liquid Nitrogen risk assessments e. Mold/Water damage assessments f. Risk assessments g. Noise assessments h. Lighting assessments i. Confined space assessments j. Annual emergency preparedness audit of respiratory protection equipment

Compliance

Assists in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal compliance guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations, technical assistance, and recommendations to occupational health and safety programs. a. OSHA respirator fit testing b. Exposure monitoring c. USP 797 pharmacy compliance sampling d. Licensed Mold Assessment Consultant – Texas Department of Licensing e. Review construction plans and provide comments in Project Workspace for OHS program safety compliance f. Review/update/edit OHS owned Institution policies and procedures

Program Support and Implementation

Participates in the development, management, and implementation of various Occupational Health and Safety programs, including industrial hygiene sampling . Assists in the review and monitoring of programs for effectiveness and efficiency. a. Respiratory Protection program/training b. Cryogenic liquids safety program c. Air sampling, IAQ investigations, Bioaerosol sampling d. Pharmacy compliance sampling e. Slip, Trip, and Fall hazard prevention program f. OHS equipment maintenance, inventory, material handling g. New OHS equipment evaluation Conducts and revises Occupational Health and Safety training programs. a. Facilities mandatory safety training b. Safety Liaison program A requirement of this position is to be competent and expected to enter data into mobile devices while working away from your workstation, where wi-fi is available. In areas where wi-fi is not available, data is expected to be entered or uploaded at the earliest opportunity.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science or related field. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
