The Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in the diagnosis, classification, and monitoring of hematologic malignancies and other complex disorders. Utilizing advanced flow cytometric technologies, this highly specialized laboratory provides essential diagnostic information that directly influences treatment decisions and patient outcomes.

This Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist position offers the opportunity to serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert within a sophisticated clinical laboratory environment. In addition to performing complex testing and analysis, you will play an important role in staff development, quality initiatives, validation activities, and the continuous advancement of laboratory operations.

In this role, you will perform and interpret complex flow cytometry testing, including specimen processing, staining, acquisition, analysis, and reporting. You will be responsible for accurately evaluating all testing panels, identifying technical issues such as staining or acquisition errors, troubleshooting instrumentation and workflow challenges, and ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely patient results. Your expertise will help maintain the laboratory's high standards of quality and diagnostic excellence.

As a senior member of the team, you will serve as a technical resource and mentor, providing training, competency assessments, and guidance to new employees and laboratory staff. You will contribute to the development of personnel while helping maintain compliance with CAP, CMS, and other regulatory requirements. This role also offers opportunities to participate in validation of new methodologies, implementation of new technologies, and continuous process improvement initiatives.

You will play a key role in supporting quality assurance and laboratory operations, including reviewing quality control data, maintaining instrumentation, validating new software and testing platforms, and helping ensure efficient inventory and workflow management. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to independently solve complex problems are essential to success.

The hours for this position are 11am - 7:30pm. The ideal candidate will have prior Bone Marrow experience

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs complex laboratory tests and analyzes results.

- Capable of recognizing staining errors, acquisition errors such as compensation.

- Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols. 
- Ensures and verifies quality control data is appropriate for the complexity of the reported tests. 
- Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment. 
- Validates and evaluates new methodologies and tests. Sets up connectivity with the help of technical support. 
- Follows section’s inventory control system to assure effective use of supplies and reagents. 
- Troubleshoots instrument problems and tests new equipment. 
- Completes, verifies and reports testing in a timely manner 
- Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates. 
- Prepares specimens and performs analytical examinations and quality tests. 
- Operates and performs preventive maintenance.

Enhances productivity and laboratory lab functions by demonstrating dependability. 
- Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section. 
- Assists peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work. 
- Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled. 
- Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency. 
- Assists in the development of laboratory personnel and tests, to enhance laboratory functions. 
- Accurately trains and performs competency assessments 
- Participates in process improvement projects. 
- Validates database for new software or new tests implemented in the laboratory. 
- Coaches and mentors’ students and employees.

Computer Skills 
- Maintains proficiency in computer functions in the lab processes. 
- Properly acquires specimen data into computer system(s). 
- Analyzes and evaluates patient results correctly and appropriately. 
- Stores patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.

Education

Required:
• Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR
• Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program

Preferred:
• Master’s Degree in a related science field
• Doctorate in a related science field

Work Experience

Required:
• 6 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• 5 years of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field OR
• 4 years of clinical laboratory experience with completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program OR
• 2 years of required experience with a Master’s Degree OR
• With a Doctorate degree, no experience required

Licenses and Certifications

Preferred (upon hire):
• ASCP – American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR
• CHS – Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• MDT – Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical Technologists (AMT) OR
• MT – Medical Technologist, American Medical Technologists (AMT)
