The Point of Care Testing (POCT) Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a vital role in delivering rapid diagnostic results that support timely clinical decision-making throughout the institution. This team partners closely with nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure testing performed outside of the traditional laboratory environment meets the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
 

This Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist position offers the opportunity to serve as a technical leader and subject matter expert within a highly visible and collaborative laboratory program. In addition to performing complex testing and quality oversight activities, you will play a key role in staff development, competency assessment, process improvement, and operational support across the institution's Point of Care Testing program.
In this role, you will perform and oversee laboratory testing activities while ensuring compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. You will troubleshoot instrumentation and testing issues, review quality control data, support inventory management, validate new methodologies and equipment, and ensure accurate and timely reporting of results. As a senior team member, you will also provide guidance to technologists and technicians, serving as a resource for questions related to laboratory policies and procedures, particularly in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor.
 

A significant component of this role involves training, mentorship, and technical leadership. You will assist with employee onboarding, competency assessments, and continuing education while coaching and mentoring staff, students, and fellows. You will contribute to the development and implementation of new procedures, support software and database validations, and participate in initiatives that enhance laboratory quality, productivity, and operational efficiency.
 

You will also help drive continuous improvement and regulatory excellence, participating in process improvement projects, reviewing and updating procedures, and supporting compliance with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and institutional requirements. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as this role routinely interacts with clinical teams and stakeholders throughout the organization to resolve issues and support patient care.

**The hours for this position are Saturday – Sunday (6am – 6:30pm) & Monday – Tuesday (7am – 3:30pm). The ideal candidate will have prior POCT experience**
 

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Performs all laboratory testing specific to the assigned section
- Remains knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols
- Ensures and verifies quality control data is appropriate for the complexity of the reported tests
- Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory equipment
- Communicates problems with Supervisor or Manager as appropriate
- Maintains competency in computer functions in assigned areas
- Follow inventory control system to ensure effective use of supplies and reagents
- Completes, verifies and reports testing in timely manner
- Complies with safety guidelines and procedures and adheres to regulatory mandates
- Remains responsible and accountable for all actions.
- In the absence of Laboratory Supervisor, guides and assists Technologists and technicians to answer questions regarding policy and procedures in the areas trained.

Assists in the development of laboratory personnel and tests to enhance laboratory functions and productivity.
- Adjusts, prioritizes, and organizes work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands.
- Assists peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work
- Adheres to attendance policy, begins work as scheduled
- Works independently, utilizes resources available to maximize efficiency
- Actively participates in training students, employees and fellows
- Assists in competency testing
- Participates in process improvement projects
- Validates and evaluates new methodologies, equipment and tests with the help of Laboratory Supervisor and technical support.
- Validates database for new software and tests implemented in the laboratory
- Reviews, updates and writes new procedures
- Coaches and mentors’ students and employees

Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external
- Actively participates in training and orientation of new technicians to learn job duties and responsibilities
- Complies with section’s telephone courtesy policies and procedures
- Demonstrates cooperation when working with both internal and external customers
- Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances remains willing and capable of assisting with crisis situations
- Communicates problems with Supervisor or Lab Manager as needed

Education

Required:
• Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR
• Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program

Preferred:
• Master’s Degree in a related science field
• Doctorate in a related science field

Work Experience

Required:
• 6 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR
• 5 years of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field OR
• 4 years of clinical laboratory experience with completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program OR
• 2 years of required experience with a Master’s Degree OR
• With a Doctorate degree, no experience required

Licenses and Certifications

Preferred (upon hire):
• ASCP – American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR
• CHS – Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR
• MDT – Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical Technologists (AMT) OR
• MT – Medical Technologist, American Medical Technologists (AMT)
