Chaplains at MD Anderson provide pastoral care to our patients, their families and staff. Chaplains visit patients at their bedside, receive prayer requests and lead support groups.
The primary purpose of the Sr. Chaplain position is to provide spiritual care to address the psychosocial needs of patients, their families and staff as a member of the interdisciplinary team. 

The ideal candidate will have more than two years of experience with Pediatric patients.


Primary clinical assignment is Children's Cancer Hospital/Pediatric patients and their caregivers.

Provides direct pastoral care and education; evaluates plans and administrates pastoral care coverage including on-call.  Responds to all referrals for pastoral care, advance directives according to referral triage guidelines. Responds to code blue calls and deaths, providing a non-anxious (open) presence.


Demonstrates the ability to relate to the patient at a significant cultural, theological, and pastoral level. Effectively evaluates spiritual needs, interventions, outcomes and devises a plan of care based on assessments.  Provides chapel leadership and sacramental ministry as needed. Provides support group leadership as needed. 

Documents patient care according to regulatory requirements and institutional policy. Monitors professional use of self through data entry and ongoing program evaluation of pastoral services offered.


Chaplains meet with patients and families who:

  • Desire prayer or spiritual counseling
  • Request communion, baptism, sacrament of the sick or anointing
  • Want to have a better understanding of their relationship with God or a need for spiritual guidance and direction
  • Need spiritual support as they undergo medical or surgical treatment
  • Are wrestling with religious issues such as unresolved grief, lack of faith, inability to pray or abandonment by God, or experience loss of hope or meaning of life
  • Would like information about community religious congregations


Required: Graduate level theological degree from a college, university or theological school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Equivalencies for graduate level theological degree will be granted by the individual professional organization according to established guidelines. 


Required: Two years as professional chaplain and/or spiritual care educator. Certified Educator Candidate Status from ACPE -OR- Certification by Association of Professional Chaplains/BCCI, Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains or other COMISS certifying organizations.
