Surgical Technologist – Main Operating Room
Location: MD Anderson Cancer Center – Texas Medical Center

Work Week: Days
Shift: 2 12-hour shifts and 2 8-hour shifts per week
Off Day: TBD based on institutional needs
Orientation Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:30am–3:00pm for the first 6 months

New graduates with CST certification encouraged to apply! Candidates with EMT or Head & Neck Plastics experience will also be considered.

About Perioperative Services

Our Main Operating Room spans 30+ state-of-the-art suites across the Main Building and Mays Clinic. The Perioperative Services team collaborates across disciplines—including Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Surgery—to support over 15,000 surgical procedures each year, ensuring top-tier care and patient safety.


What You’ll Do

As a Surgical Technologist at MD Anderson, you'll be an integral part of the surgical team, supporting complex procedures and ensuring excellence at every step.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Clinical Excellence

  • Prepare and maintain sterile field by setting up surgical instruments and supplies

  • Review and follow surgeon preference cards; ensure efficient use of supplies

  • Maintain aseptic technique and perform sponge/instrument/sharps counts

  • Assist in specimen collection, labeling, and transport

Accountability & Safety

  • Follow all safety and infection control policies and procedures

  • Monitor for breaks in sterile technique or unsafe conditions and report immediately

  • Support on-time case starts and efficient turnover between procedures

Team Collaboration

  • Communicate clearly with surgical, nursing, and anesthesia teams

  • Demonstrate flexibility and cross-service competency

  • Foster a positive, respectful work environment through teamwork and support

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.

Certification/Licensure 
One of the following: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). New graduate must obtain and maintain certification by the 180th day after date of hire date. Employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility prior to September 1, 2009. Completed appropriate training program for surgical technology in the military of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.
